Commentary (Australia innings)

The action for tonight ends here. Tomorrow sees the clash between New Zealand and England at 1000 GMT (1530 IST) followed by the Sri Lanka-West Indies encounter at 1400 GMT (1930 IST), both at Pallekele. Until then, on behalf of the commentators and scorers, Adios! Take Care!

Right. Another Watson-orchestrated victory for Australia but do not take away anything from Australia's bowlers. They stifled one of the best batting units in this competition and reaped the rewards. Australia would go with full confidence ahead of their clash against South Africa on Sunday at this same venue on Sunday, 30th September, 2012 at 1000 GMT while India meet Pakistan in a do-or-die clash for themselves later that day at 1400 GMT here itself.

SHANE WATSON HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. His third in a row! Is proud to have been able to contribute to the game in one way or the other. On the rain, he is not too sure whether it did help Australia's momentum and feels that the batting was excellent.

A smiling victorious Australian captain George Bailey says that the bowling set up the win. Heaps praises on Cummins and Starc and also says that it was a pleasure sitting in the dug out watching the batsmen play. Smiles when asked about the result given that they were ranked ninth while entering the tournament and shrugs it off, saying that rankings do not matter.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni says that the team needs to analyze what really happened and puts a bit of the blame on the rain. Admits that the batsmen could not cash in as wickets fell at regular intervals. But also says that the rain came at the right time(ironically) and blames it as the reason for the bowlers struggling to grip the ball, similar to India's England tour. Does not want to take any credit away from the Aussie batsmen and feels that they did brilliantly. Feels sorry for his bowlers who gave it their best but credits the Aussie bowlers. Does not mince words when saying that the batting was disappointing tonight and 140 was too small a score. But is quick to add that even if they had scored 180, the way Australia batted tonight, India would still have lost. Does not want to look deep into this game but wants to assess the finer points and take the positives.

Apart from the first six overs when the Asian side was batting, nothing went India's way. They kept losing wickets and eventually managed only a paltry total on the board. While chasing, the Australian openers went berserk from the word go and scaled down the minuscule target without breaking a sweat. The Indian bowling woes returned and the spinners also joined the hapless seamers. They were too short in their lengths and just for the argument sake, one can say that the outfield was wet and it was probably hard to grip the ball. In the end, it was a complete mismatch and the better side on the day won the contest.

It's a knock-out! India have been humiliated here at the hands of Australia as they succumb to a big defeat with 31 balls remaining. An emphatic win and the Kangaroos will draw a lot of heart from this clinical performance. It's a day to forget ASAP for the Men in Blue as they have been completely outclassed in every facet of the game.

Commentary (India innings)

Right! 141 is that sort of a total where neither side will be relaxed. Earlier in the day, the South Africa-Pakistan game went down to the wire with the latter making a hash of the chase. Hopefully the rain stays away and we get a good game...

A good start given by the openers which was wasted by the middle order. Irfan Pathan played a solid knock at the top but Australia came back well outside the Powerplay overs. Raina managed to get some good hits, helped by some sloppy Australian bowling and fielding to take the score to a competitive 140, which could have 10 less, had the fielding been up to the mark. The youngster Patrick Cummins impressed again, with outstanding figures of 2/16 in 4 overs while Watson picked up 3 scalps.

A fighting total put up by India here, though they will not be completely happy with it. Having said that, they will also feel that they can defend it, given that THIS Aussie side has had its struggles against spin.

19.6 S Watson to R Ashwin, Fullish ball outside off, Ashwin drives it square of the wicket where Hogg stops it with a dive inside the circle. Another single, 11 off the over and India finish on 140/7! 140/7

Watson puts it on a fuller length outside off at 131.5 kph, Raina aims for an inside out shot over covers, unveils it too but fails to get enough wood behind it. Maxwell with a simple catch at wide long off and Watson gives a sendoff to Raina. Very aggressive character, isn't he? India are 137/7! 137/7

19.2 S Watson to S Raina, FOUR! Too full in length and drifting down the leg side at 133.7 kph, Raina eases it off his pads past short fine leg for a boundary. 137/6

19.1 S Watson to S Raina, FOUR! Watson serves a friendly full toss on middle, Raina clears his front leg and heaves it over mid-wicket. Ashwin calls him through for the bye and Matthew Wade returns a ridiculous throw which is over the bowler. Raina looks for the second but then sees Brad Hogg tidy it up from long off. Mitchell Starc comes back into the attack. And in the meanwhile, there is some movement near the boundary line as the groundsmen are getting ready. Hopefully, it doesn't rain! Oh dear... it is starting to drizzle as I type...

16.6 D Christian to S Raina, Similar ball, full again, outside off once more, 133.1 kph, pushed towards long off for one. 11 runs from the over, good start to the death for India. 115/6

14.5 R Ashwin to G Maxwell, That is it! Full outside off, Maxwell comes down the track and just eases it through the covers. Zaheer Khan over there just slides across and the ball goes through. AUSTRALIA WIN BY 9 WICKETS WITH 31 BALLS TO SPARE! 141/1

The national anthems are over and the Australians are taking the field. Irfan Pathan and Gautam Gambhir are the Indian openers. Glenn Maxwell to start off with the proceedings. All set, fasten your seat belts, here we go...

Australia - David Warner, Shane Watson, Michael Hussey, Cameron White, George Bailey(cap), Glenn Maxwell, Daniel Christian, Matthew Wade(wkt), Brad Hogg, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc.

India - Gautam Gambhir, Irfan Pathan, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(wkt/cap), Piyush Chawla, Harbhajan Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin, Zaheer Khan.

TOSS - Australian skipper George Bailey spins the coin, his counterpart Mahendra Singh Dhoni calls Tails and it is a Tail. INDIA WILL BAT. Dhoni says that he wants to put the runs on the board and then defend it. Adds that it was not an easy decision, but feels that the track looks to be on the slower side and might assist spin. Informs that Dinda and Balaji make way for Zaheer and Ashwin. Also says that India have got a strong batting line-up and it goes pretty deep. A confident George Bailey says that his side has been pretty good and that is the reason they have been keeping the same team. Adds that they have been here throughout the tournament but the pitch is starting to look on the slower side and could get even slower as the game progresses. Admits that India have got a great batting line-up and hopes to counter that.

PITCH REPORT - The wicket as we saw in the first game today is on the slower side but towards the end the ball was nicely coming onto the bat. It's safe to consider it a belter but at the same time the spinners will enjoy bowling here. There is definitely some turn as we saw Saeed Ajmal and Robin Peterson turning it square. Expect the likes of Brad Hogg, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla and Ravichandran Ashwin to utilize the conditions to their advantage.

WEATHER - Thundershowers stay away. You are scheduled to come some time tonight but given that we have had three nail-biters as starters for Super Eights, cannot wait and hope to see the fourth! The weather is pretty clear at the moment but that danger of rain is always lurking...
