Commentary (Australia innings)

Australian batsmen had no answer to the swing and seam of the best attack on display and had it not been for the two Victorians, Matthew Wade and John Hastings, the lead for the visitors would have been even bigger. 4 wickets for Dale Steyn and guess what, three for Robin Peterson! Big task ahead for the Aussies as they have no option, but to try and bowl out the Proteas cheaply. Stay tuned for the third innings.

A handy 62-run lead for South Africa. Not what Australia would have hoped for this morning. They were up against a fired-up pace attack on a helpful bouncy track and the number 1 Test side has proved its worth here.

53.1 R Peterson to Hastings, OUT! Good catch and that is the end of the innings. Third wicket for Peterson! Flighted outside off, Hastings comes down the track and looks to go over the top, miscues and gets a top edge. The ball goes high in the air and Alviro Petersen at long off, steadies himself under it. Takes the catch but then loses balance, but has the presence of mind to throw the ball back into play, then come out and catch it. AUSTRALIA BOWLED OUT FOR 163! 163/10

Mid on and mid-wicket go back for Hastings.

52.6 M Morkel to Starc, Good length delivery outside off, 137.7 kph, Johnson flashes and misses. Does not look like the tail is eager to spend some time out in the middle. 163/9

52.1 M Morkel to Hastings, A short ball outside off, 139.6 kph, Hastings rides the bounce nicely and defends it to the off side. 162/9

51.6 R Peterson to Starc, Full outside off, 83.5 kph, pushed towards cover. A wicket maiden for Peterson, his figures now read 8-0-44-2. 162/9

Mitchell Starc walks in at number 11, replacing Johnson.

51.5 R Peterson to Johnson, OUT! Bowled! Second wicket for Peterson and Johnson has thrown it away. Nice loop outside off, 77.2 kph, a little bit of turn as well, Johnson gets down for the slog sweep but misses and the ball finds the leg stump. Johnson departs for 7, AUSTRALIA 162/9, trail by 63! 162/9

50.4 M Morkel to Hastings, Good length delivery outside off, 137.9 kph, Hastings pushes and misses. 162/8

50.3 M Morkel to Johnson, On middle, 141.4 kph, tucked wide of mid-wicket for a single. 162/8

49.6 R Peterson to Hastings, Goes back and works it towards square leg. 12 runs from the over! 161/8

49.5 R Peterson to Hastings, FOUR! Slam! Hat-trick of boundaries and this is the best of the lot! Less flight this time outside off, 74.6 kph, Hastings gets down and slog sweeps it over mid-wicket for the third boundary of the over! The stand is worth 21 now! 161/8

49.4 R Peterson to Hastings, FOUR! And again! A better shot this time. More flight outside off, Hastings gets to the pitch of the ball and swings it over mid-wicket for the same result. The deficit is now 68! 157/8

49.3 R Peterson to Hastings, FOUR! Just over! Hastings loses his patience now. Flighted outside off, Hastings cannot resist himself and looks to swing hard but gets it from the inside part of the bat just over mid-wicket for a boundary! 150 UP FOR AUSTRALIA! The stand is worth 13 now! 153/8

49.1 R Peterson to Hastings, On middle, 83.8 kph, Hastings defends it towards mid-wicket. 149/8

DRINKS BREAK.

48.6 M Morkel to Johnson, Full outside off, Johnson flashes and misses. 149/8

48.5 M Morkel to Johnson, NOT OUT. Short outside off, 140.8 kph, Johnson looks to uppercut but misses. There is a noise as the ball goes past and the Proteas appeal but the umpire is not interested. It is reviewed and neither replays nor Hot Spot indicate anything. Decision stays as it is. 149/8

Appeal for a caught behind! Umpire Kettleborough feels that Johnson has not nicked that, South Africa feel otherwise and have taken the review.

48.4 M Morkel to Johnson, Outside off, 140.2 kph, left alone. 149/8

48.3 M Morkel to Johnson, Short outside off, 143.3 kph, Johnson goes for the pull but gets a bottom edge towards cover. 149/8

47.2 R Peterson to Johnson, A touch short outside off, 80.6 kph, punched towards cover for a run. 147/8

47.1 R Peterson to J Hastings, Full on middle, 81.5 kph, pushed towards long on for a single. That is a bit surprising, you have got a man struggling against spin and another who has just arrived, still you have a long on. The deficit is now 79. 146/8

46.6 M Morkel to Johnson, Landed outside off, 141.4 kph, left alone. 145/8

46.5 M Morkel to M Johnson, Lovely shot, full outside off, 140 kph, Johnson punches this through the covers and gets a couple. 145/8

46.4 M Morkel to Hastings, Misfield from Steyn. Full on middle, 140.9 kph, Hastings flicks it towards mid on. Dale Steyn comes charging in but unfortunately for him, he gets a bad bounce and the ball goes through. A single now being taken. Hastings wants the second but Johnson sends him back. 143/8

46.3 M Morkel to Johnson, On middle, 141.4 kph, tucked wide of mid on for a single. 142/8

46.2 M Morkel to Johnson, OUCH! That has got to hurt. Johnson getting a bit of what he gave to the Proteas last evening. Short ball, from around the wicket, coming into the body, Johnson shows his back to it and gets hit on the right bicep. That has got be sore. 141/8

Mitchell Johnson, local boy, walks out at number 10, replacing Wade.

45.5 R Peterson to Wade, OUT! Bowled! There is that breakthrough! Peterson has done the trick for South Africa! Not a great delivery but a terrible shot. Flighted outside off, 81.6 kph, Wade gets down to sweep but picks out the wrong length. Misses and the ball comes in to hit the off stump. A shattered Wade walks back after playing a blinder of a knock, making 68. AUSTRALIA 140/8, trail by 85! 140/8

45.4 R Peterson to Hastings, Played to mid-wicket region by the batsman. The batsmen have run through for a single. 140/7

45.3 R Peterson to Hastings, Loopy delivery outside off again, 82.4 kph, Hastings pushes and misses. 139/7

45.2 R Peterson to J Hastings, Oh dear... Hastings and then Wade, would have been out on this ball! Poor cricket from the debutant. Tossed up outside off, 78.4 kph, Hastings looks to take the spinner on and swings hard. Is nowhere near the pitch of the ball and gets a thick leading edge. Luckily for him, the ball does not carry to backward point. Wade is now down the track for the single but Hastings is busy watching the fielder. Luckily for Australia, Steyn fumbles and Wade gets back. 139/7

45.1 R Peterson to Hastings, Flighted outside off, 79 kph, left alone. 139/7

Robin Peterson is back on. 4-0-26-0 so far. Replaces Philander. Australia trail by 86 runs. 56 overs left in the day.

44.6 M Morkel to Wade, Puts bat to ball to this one and defends. 139/7

Meanwhile, former tearaway fast bowler from Australia, the great Dennis Lillee is currently doing radio commentary in Australia. On being asked about Siddle's rest and his diet, Lille rubbishes his vegetarian diet and says that Siddle must eat fish and chicken. Is not even bothered what would vegetarians all around the world will complain on hearing that.

44.5 M Morkel to Wade, Another leave outside off. 139/7

44.4 M Morkel to Wade, Stands tall and pushes it to point. 139/7

44.3 M Morkel to Wade, Three in a row, left alone outside off. 139/7

44.2 M Morkel to Wade, Another leave outside the off stump. 139/7

44.1 M Morkel to Wade, Landed on a length outside off, 134.7 kph, left alone. 139/7

Morne Morkel now. 8-4-13-1 so far. Replaces Steyn. Australia trail by 86 runs. 57 overs left in the day.

43.6 V Philander to Hastings, Another back foot defense. 139/7

43.5 V Philander to Hastings, Full outside off, 128.8 kph, left alone. 139/7

43.4 V Philander to Hastings, This time he defends it solidly. 139/7

43.3 V Philander to Hastings, FOUR! First boundary of his Test career and it has come in some style! Risky though. Short outside off, 132.6 kph, Hastings stands tall and at the last moment and just guides it over gully to third man! The deficit is now 86! 139/7

43.2 V Philander to Hastings, Landed outside off, 130.6 kph, tapped towards cover. 135/7

43.1 V Philander to Wade, Short and wide outside off, 128.5 kph, slapped towards deep point for a single. 135/7

42.5 D Steyn to Wade, A short ball down the leg side, 138.7 kph, Wade goes for the hook but misses. Steyn smilingly appeals for the catch with nothing much in it. Had Wade connected with that shot, it would have travelled some distance. 133/7

42.4 D Steyn to Wade, Just taps it towards point and sets off for the single but is sent back. 133/7

42.3 D Steyn to Wade, Landed outside off, 139.3 kph, left alone. 133/7

42.2 D Steyn to Wade, The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 133/7

42.1 D Steyn to Hastings, Full on middle, 143.1 kph, Hastings works it through mid-wicket for a single. 133/7

41.6 V Philander to J Hastings, Fine shot. Full outside off, 133.9 kph, Hastings just pushes it past Hashim Amla at short extra cover. Does not have enough on it to reach the ropes and the batsmen get three. This stand is worth 32 now. 132/7

41.5 V Philander to Wade, That is very well done by Philander. Good length delivery on middle, 131.5 kph, Wade tucks it towards square leg and calls for the single but Philander gets across quickly and even picks up and throws it at the non-striker's end in one motion. Misses but Wade would have been in. 129/7

41.4 V Philander to Wade, This time he pushes the ball slowly but meets cover again. Guess he was trying for that push-and-run option. 128/7

41.3 V Philander to Wade, Half volley, outside off, 130.7 kph, Wade drives it beautifully but straight to the man at short extra cover. 128/7

40.6 D Steyn to Hastings, Short outside off, 139.2 kph, punched straight to point. 128/7

40.5 D Steyn to Hastings, DROPPED? Nope. A lovely short delivery again, 137.7 kph, Hastings looks to duck but in that process his bat hangs in the air. The ball goes off something behind and AB de Villiers leaps but cannot catch that. Dale Steyn starts to celebrate but then the expression on his face changes quickly as to that of a child's when it is denied a toffee. de Villiers quickly gets up and indicates to Steyn that it was off the arm guard. And it was. Interestingly, had the umpire given that out if it had been taken, Hastings would have been on his way as there are no reviews left for Australia! 128/7

40.4 D Steyn to Hastings, Excellent short delivery on middle, 141.7 kph, Hastings ducks under it and AB de Villiers has to leap to collect that. 128/7

40.3 D Steyn to Wade, On middle, 138.6 kph, tucked through mid-wicket for a single. 128/7

40.2 D Steyn to Wade, Full outside off, 138.3 kph, Wade pushes it towards cover. 127/7

40.1 D Steyn to Wade, Beaten! Good delivery. Lands it on a length outside off, perfect one, in the corridor of uncertainty, 142.2 kph, Wade wasn't sure whether he should be forward or backward. Played from the crease in the end and the ball moved just enough to beat the outside edge. 127/7

39.6 V Philander to Wade, A touch short on leg stump, 130.8 kph, Wade gets across and works it towards fine leg for a single. 127/7

39.5 V Philander to Wade, Full outside off, 135.2 kph, Wade lunges and defends it towards mid off. 126/7

39.4 V Philander to Hastings, Now that is a good single. Hastings goes back, works it wide of Robin Peterson at mid-wicket and easily crosses over for the single. The deficit is now 99. 126/7

39.3 V Philander to Hastings, Similar line, another defense. 125/7

39.2 V Philander to Hastings, Goes right back and defends. 125/7

39.1 V Philander to Hastings, On middle, 131.7 kph, tucked towards square leg for a couple. 125/7

38.6 D Steyn to Wade, Another watchful defense. 123/7

38.5 D Steyn to Wade, The batsman has defended it by getting right behind the line of the delivery. 123/7

38.4 D Steyn to J Hastings, RUN OUT CHANCE MISSED! Oh dear... the Aussies are taking some risky singles here. Outside off, 138.2 kph, Hastings pushes it towards cover and sets off for a quick single. The other debutant of the match, Dean Elgar gets to the ball and fires a throw at the non-striker's end but misses. The big Duke (Hastings) would have been gone even with a dive. 123/7

38.3 D Steyn to Wade, Played to the point region by the batsman. They pick up a single. 122/7

38.2 D Steyn to Wade, Outside off again, 141.8 kph, Wade pushes and sets off for the single but is sent back. 121/7

37.3 V Philander to Hastings, Outside off, 134.7 kph, pushed towards cover. 121/7

37.2 V Philander to Wade, There is that short ball again, 125.7 kph, pulled away in front of mid-wicket this time. Wade hares across for the single, charges back for the second but Hastings sends him back at the correct moment. Had he not done that, Wade would have been walking back to the pavillion. 121/7

37.1 V Philander to Wade, Good length delivery just outside off, 129.8 kph, nipping back in, Wade trusts the bounce and allows it through. 120/7

Vernon Philander to continue. 12-0-41-2 so far. Australia trail by 105 runs. 64 overs left in the day.

36.6 D Steyn to Hastings, Stays in his crease to defend. 120/7

36.5 D Steyn to Hastings, A bouncer on middle, 137.8 kph, Hastings ducks under it. 120/7

36.4 D Steyn to M Wade, A short ball now, 137.3 kph, Wade pounces onto it as if there is no tomorrow and pulls it with disdain towards deep square leg. Man there, so just a single. The stand is worth 20 now. 120/7

36.3 D Steyn to Wade, Landed outside off, 139.9 kph, pushed towards cover. 119/7

36.2 D Steyn to Wade, Full and just on off, 133.8 kph, pushed back to the bowler. 119/7

Strange but interesting field set for Wade. There is a deep backward point, deep backward square leg and a fine leg in place!

36.1 D Steyn to Hastings, Good length delivery on middle, 134.8 kph, Hastings goes back and works it through mid-wicket for a single. 119/7

Dale Steyn to start off proceedings. Hastings to face. Three slips, two gullies and Hashim Amla is the man at short leg under the helmet. All set! Here we go!

How much can Australia keep the deficit to? Hastings is technically an all-rounder but this is just his first Test. Wade is at the other end, playing well, and Johnson, Starc can bat a bit as well. But against the moving ball, it seems quite a big ask.

Back for the post-lunch session! 107 is what the deficit is at the moment. The sky is bright and sunny and South Africa have completely turned the tables on Australia after the first session assault.

The Proteas have given Australia a dose of their own medicine, a repeat of the scenario yesterday. South Africa were all over the home side at the WACA in the first hour one would say. A controversial decision against Warner, Steyn's fiery delivery to eradicate skipper Clarke and Ponting's failure in the first innings were some of the shining highlights. Hussey and Wade led a splendid comeback before the former threw his wicket away, at least under his principles. The second session promises more action as Wade is now playing a fantastic knock in the middle. Join us back after lunch.

33.4 V Philander to J Hastings, Run-out chance! A good length delivery outside off, Hastings pushes it away to cover. Dean Elgar with a shy at the non-striker's end, he missed it and John was in with a slide anyways. Risky way to get your first run in Tests. 112/7

Maiden Test fifty for Matthew Wade!

31.2 R Peterson to Wade, SIX! What a hit! This man is bringing up the best out of him in a tight situation. A well tossed up delivery, Wade is down the track and slogs that one away over mid-wicket. That's the maiden fifty for him and he needs to stick in with the tail, hopefully. 106/7

A good nagging delivery, lands on a good length and just about seams away, Hussey was leaving those deliveries well but this time flirts with that, gets an outside edge which travels at a good height to Graeme Smith at first slip. 29.2 R Peterson to Wade, FOUR! Too short a delivery, rank long hop at 82.8 kph, Wade goes deep in the crease and cracks it away through covers. A typical counter-attacking partnership from Australia. 98/6

12.1 D Steyn to Warner, OUT! Warner takes the review and it proves unsuccessful for him! A good length delivery outside off, Warner slashes hard and there seems to be a noise as it travels to AB de Villiers. South Africa appeal big time and the umpire raises his finger. Steyn celebrates but Warner is not sure and enquires with Lyon. He finally opts for the UDRS. Hot Spot does not detect any heat from the front camera. But sideways, there seems to be a thick deflection off the blade. This is really controversial stuff. Not sure whether there was any conclusive evidence on that but it's gone as the umpire's call. Maybe the decision is given on the evidence of the noise. 34/3

Vernon Philander first up. Play!

Australia lost Cowan and Watson, two crucial top-order wickets yesterday and the Proteas would look to get some more now. Nightwatchman Nathan Lyon and David Warner make their way out to the middle.

The sun is out right now and conditions look just about apt for a good day of cricket. Hopefully, it lives up to the expectations that the Grand Finale has been generating since a couple of days.

This is turning out to be a good contest so far. Australia have managed to bundle out South Africa for 225, in spite of having them under the mat at one stage with a score of 6/75. Faf du Plessis has lead the fightback once again, staying unbeaten on 78.

DAY 2. SESSION 1.

The deficit for Australia is 192 and they would look to bat sensibly tomorrow morning. Good bye and cheers!!!

Fabulous day of cricket! Australia bowled exceedingly well to restrict South Africa to a decent first innings total and the Proteas did well in the last hour to pick up a couple of wickets to keep themselves in hunt. Commentary (South Africa innings)

From 6/75, 225 all out. South Africa will feel they will go in with the psychological advantage. The opening pair got off to a good start before it started crumbling down. Vernon Philander gave handy support as well with the bat, but eventually threw his wicket away. Join us back in a short while.

Mitchell Starc will start off with the proceedings. Graeme Smith to take strike along with Alviro Petersen.

The big news is that RICKY PONTING WILL PLAY HIS LAST TEST TODAY. He will retire after this game and will look to bow out of Perth in fine fashion. Australia have lost their last of the 'Invincibles' and the resurrection process has already been handed over to Michael Clarke, who has done a wonderful job so far, leading from the front, with the aggressive tendency showing up in his batting as well.

Australia have gone in with four changes. Rob Quiney sits out for Shane Watson. James Pattinson hasn't recovered yet. Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus are not fit yet after the fatigued Adelaide Test. John Hastings makes his TEST DEBUT and Mitchell Starc has been romped in. Mitchell Johnson comes into the team.

South Africa won the toss and bat first! Graeme Smith has brought about three changes in the team. Rory Kleinveldt, Jacques Rudolph and Imran Tahir sit out. Dean Elgar makes his debut, Vernon Philander comes back into the playing XI and surprisingly, Robin Peterson has been brought into the team.

The Grand Finale is here and it's turned out to be one hell of a Test series. Not common that in spite of an absorbing series so far, the status is still 0-0. The No. 1 Ranking is on the cards and both sides have showcased enough passion, aggression and desperation to clinch that somehow. The last Test at Adelaide, proved that Test cricket is alive, kicking and making the news for the right reasons.

Mid on and mid-wicket go back for Hastings.

Australia are still leading with the advantage but it's been a wonderful stand from Robin Peterson and Faf du Plessis.

DAY 2. SESSION 1.
