Commentary (South Africa innings)

The South African bowlers will be raring to go at the Kiwi batsmen. All the pacers did well in the first innings and should be high on confidence. The Proteas may not have got as many as they would have expected on day 2, but whatever they have amassed looks good enough. Stay tuned for the New Zealand innings.

As predicted on stumps yesterday, the Proteas have declared a few overs after the start of the second session. The lead stands at 302 and seems to be enough for the Kiwis whose batting was not at all worth a dime in their first innings.

95.2 Martin to R Peterson, OUT! Cleaned 'em up! Smith declares the innings on 347/8! A fullish delivery on middle and off, Peterson goes for the same shot that got him the boundary on the previous ball and misses. The ball kisses the pad and goes on to hit the off stump. 347/8

94.1 J Patel to Peterson, Flighted up on off stump, flicked through mid-wicket for a single. 343/7

At his home ground, Vernon Philander comes out to bat. That makes it two from the Western Province at the crease now.

93.6 C Martin to de Villiers, OUT! Around his legs! de Villiers walks well across the off stump and Martin bowls a good length ball that nips in a tad. de Villiers wanted to work it away to the leg side but misses the line of the ball and the ball takes the middle stump. de Villiers was trying to get a move on and in the process of trying to innovate too much he perished. 342/7

de Villiers and Peterson have made their way out to the middle and the Kiwis are ready as well. It will be Peterson to face Martin.

An early declaration doesn't seem likely with just four wickets remaining. Smith will probably wait for the Kiwis to bowl his team out. The lead stands at 290 now and one would feel that even this much is enough for the Proteas. To know where this match will be heading, join us for the second session in a while.

27 overs, 83 runs and three wickets in the first session makes it New Zealand's session on the morning of day 2. They came out today and stuck to better lines and lengths, keeping the Protea batsmen quiet for most parts of the session. The run rate was brought down considerably and Boult looked the pick of the bowlers, picking up two good wickets while Martin picked up the other wicket.

There was some rain early in the morning, but right now it looks beautiful out there with some blue skies. The Protea pair of centurion, Alviro Petersen and AB de Villiers are out in the middle as the Kiwis take their respective fielding positions. It will be Bracewell to bowl to Petersen.

To say that the Kiwis are left with an uphill task will be an understatement. All odds are against the Kiwis to get back in the game. We could be in for a 2 or a 2 and a half day finish to this Test. South Africa lead by 207 runs currently and that could well go over 300 by the end of the first session. It will be interesting to see if they bully the visitors by declaring early and putting them in to bat by the middle of the second session.

South Africa just over turned the tale of David and Goliath on day 1 of the first Test between them and New Zealand. Good morning and welcome to the coverage of day 2 from Newlands, Cape Town. New Zealand, the David in this context, were completely steam-rolled yesterday by some brilliant bowling early on in the day and solid batting later on by the Proteas.

The mind-boggling bowling performance was followed by a clean effort by the batsmen as Amla and Kallis scored half-centuries supporting Petersen who got to a well compiled century. AB de Villiers is giving him company as the lead stands at 207 on the first day itself. South Africa will try to bat the Kiwis out of this match tomorrow and put them in late on day 2. Do join us for all of the second day's action tomorrow, same place, same time. Cheers and goodbye!

One can't pick a single Kiwi player who has stood out today with a good performance. The Proteas have many such names to boast of today. To start off, Philander set the tone for the day picking up five wickets very early on. His burst was followed by Steyn, who got to 300 Test wickets and Morkel's blitz in the end.

South Africa have toyed with the Kiwis throughout the day, with the ball and with the bat as well. They have proven once again why they are the best Test side at the moment. The difference between the quality of cricket played today, in all three departments of the game is incomparable. The probability of this match getting over within three days is exceedingly high.

Welcome back for the post lunch session. Amla and Petersen are the two batsmen at the crease and they would be looking to stabilize the innings after Smith's early departure. Boult will start off proceedings for the Kiwis!

It will be interesting to see how the second session shapes up. Earlier, the Protea pace bowlers steam-rolled the Kiwi batting line up within a couple of hours, for just 45. Philander was the one who caused the landslide initially picking up a five wicket haul within his six overs. If South Africa lose their way in the second session, we could have a wonderful first Test in 2013. Do join us for the post-lunch session in a while.

Needless to say, what a first session it has been. Eleven wickets fell, 10 Kiwi wickets and one Protea wicket. Smith couldn't last long enough after facing just one over. Amla escaped a close shout on the very first ball he faced. Overall, the wicket is still assisting the bowlers if they bowl decent lines and lengths.

Amla has been adjudged not out but McCullum wants to go upstairs.

Hashim Amla is the next man in for the Proteas. He was in sublime form last year.

1.1 Bracewell to Smith, OUT! Well, well! Are South Africa planning to go down the Kiwi-lane as well? A fullish delivery around off stump, straightens on to middle and the appeal turns out to be a successful one as it would have hit middle. Bracewell gets a wicket on his first delivery as Smith departs 1/1

The kiwi bowlers need to bowl out of their skins in order to keep their side in this match. The Proteas are in the driver's seat here and would be looking to build a sizable lead. Join us in a while for South Africa's reply!

Morkel and Steyn too bowled fiery spells to play a supporting hand to Philander and scalp the remaining five wickets. The Kiwi batsmen looked totally clueless against the discipline, swing and pace of the Protea bowlers and were bundled out for their third-lowest total ever. This is the lowest total in Test cricket since 1974.

What a breathtaking performance from the South African fast bowlers! They have managed to finish off the Kiwis inside the first session on day one! Philander was absolutely brilliant with his line and length early on as he ripped the top and middle order with consummate ease.
