Commentary (Sri Lanka innings)

Okay! That's it for the first game of the Super Eights which resulted in a Super Over! But do not go anywhere, the World Champions are ready for their opening game of the Super Eights as they take on power-houses West Indies. Stay tuned for that game!!!

TILLAKARATNE DILSHAN HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. Says that he kept his cool while taking that catch of Martin Guptill in the Super Over. Is happy with the way his team went about chasing a daunting 175 and is even happier that they managed to pull it off.

Victorious Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardena says that a win is great but it was too close for comfort in the end. Feels that the pitch was good but a touch on the slower side. Is proud of the way his team fought.

New Zealand captain Ross Taylor says that the start given by Mahela and Dilshan was very good but his side fought back well. Is disappointed to have not been able to chase it down in the Super Over, but adds that there is a long way to go in the tournament and promises that his side will pick itself up for the next game which is a must-win.

A great game of cricket. Top class batting and bowling but fielding was a bit on the sloppy side for both teams. Superb 12 balls in the Super Over and not a single boundary conceded! Southee and Malinga bowled excellent overs and the former was probably unlucky to finish on the losing side.

Ball 6 L Malinga to B McCullum, SRI LANKA WIN! Excellent yorker on middle, 136.7 kph, McCullum swings hard but gets a thick inside edge towards fine leg. The batsmen keep on running while Malinga is busy celebrating and no one is interested in collecting the ball! Mahela Jayawardena signals to someone to stop the ball and eventually some fielder heeds his instructions. Two runs taken.

Ross Taylor walks out. But unless Malinga gives something away, it is game over...

Ball 5 L Malinga to M Guptill, OUT! Caught! Nerve-wracking catch from Dilshan! Full outside off, 142.5 kph, Guptill lofts this massively in the air. But it does not have the distance and Dilshan takes a super cool catch at long off! That should be it for the game! Sri Lanka almost on the doorstep of victory! 8 needed from 1 ball!

Ball 4 L Malinga to B McCullum, DROPPED! 1 RUN! Another mistake from Sangakkara! Full and wide outside off, 142 kph, could have been left alone, McCullum reaches out and gets a thick outside edge to the keeper who puts it down! 8 needed from 2 balls! Sri Lanka favourites now!

Ball 3 L Malinga to B McCullum, 2 BYES! Sangakkara fumbles! Dear o dear! Full and wide outside off, but just inside the guide line, McCullum swings hard but misses. The keeper gets a bad bounce and the batsmen hare back for the second! 9 needed from 3 balls!

Change of bats for Brendon McCullum. He has got a bunch of them! Malinga in a chat with his skipper. I don't think it is about the change of bats though...

Ball 2 L Malinga to M Guptill, 1 RUN. Right in the blockhole, 143.2 kph, Guptill swings hard and gets it through mid-wicket for a single. 11 needed from 4 balls!

Ball 1 L Malinga to M Guptill, 2 RUNS. Full and wide outside off, Guptill reaches out and slashes it over point. Does not have the timing to meet the fence.

Right. Malinga has the ball, Guptill to face. 14 needed from 6 balls! Here we go!

Who will be the batsmen for New Zealand? Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill walk out from the dressing room. As of now, the man to come out next is a suspense.

Mahela Jayawardena and Lasith Malinga have a chat. Thisara Perera joins the conversation. Looks most likely that Malinga will bowl the over. More men join the conversation. The umpires have a chat with them too!

A healthy score put up by Sri Lanka. Will that last ball misfield cost the Kiwis? 14 needed from 6 balls. Hang on for the chase...

Ball 6 Southee to T Perera, 3 RUNS! A comedy of errors. Low full toss outside off, Perera gets across and mistimes his scoop towards Kyle Mills at short fine leg. The fielder runs back but puts the catch down. The fielder from square leg gets across to field but fumbles and the batsmen run hard for their lives! SRI LANKA FINISH ON 13/1!

Ball 5 Southee to T Dilshan, A leg bye. Lovely yorker down the leg side, Dilshan stumbles while trying to flick and gets hit on the pads. A quick leg bye stolen. SRI LANKA 10/1 in 0.5 overs!

Dilshan walks out.

Ball 4 T Southee to M Jayawardena, OUT! Mahela has run himself out! Full on middle, Jayawardena swings it towards mid-wicket and takes a brisk single. He himself calls for a suicidal second and is well short as the throw reaches the keeper. Easy run out. SRI LANKA 9/1 in 0.4 overs!

Mid on comes up now.

Ball 4 T Southee to T Perera, ANOTHER WIDE! Good running again! Some drama in the middle! Full and wide outside off, Perera cannot put bat to ball. His skipper calls him through for a quick single. McCullum misses the stumps at the striker's end! Southee is not happy with the wide call and complains to the umpire! SRI LANKA 8/0 in 0.3 overs!

Ball 3 T Southee to T Perera, 2 RUNS. Great ball, great running. Yorker on off, 136.5 kph, Perera somehow manages to get it down to long off. Runs hard to come back for the second. SRI LANKA 6/0 in 0.3 overs!

Ball 3 T Southee to T Perera, WIDE! Full and well outside off, Perera swings hard, but misses. SRI LANKA 4/0 in 0.2 overs!

Ball 2 T Southee to M Jayawardena, 1 RUN. Lovely yorker on leg stump, squeezed through the covers for just a single.

Ball 1 T Southee to M Jayawardena, 2 RUNS. Excellent fielding! Jayawardena backs away to the leg side, Southee, bowling from around the wicket, follows him and is clipped through fine leg. Excellent stop by B J Watling at fine leg.

Right! Tim Southee to bowl! Interestingly, Thisara Perera has walked out alongside his skipper Jayawardena in the Super Over. Mahela will take strike. All set! Fasten your set belts! Time for some wallopppppp!

Mahela Jayawardena, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thisara Perera have been nominated as the batsmen for the Lankans.

As per the rules, the side which was chasing will bat first in the Super Over. We will get you the players in a bit. Three batsmen for each side and obviously one bowler to bowl the over.

Rob Nicol top scored with 58 for the Kiwis while Dilshan smashed 76 from 53 balls for the home side. Kulasekara was the pick of the bowlers in the first innings with 1/30 in 4 overs while Franklin was the best for the Black Caps with figures of 2/34 in 24 legal balls.

This game could not have had a better result. Both sides started off well with the bat, but lost the momentum towards the end. One half centurion for each team and nothing better than a tie to decide the winner! Seventh 'tie' in T20Is - 4th involving NZ (won 2, lost 1 in Super over) and 1st involving Sri Lanka.

19.6 Tim Southee to L Thirimanne, OUT! TIE! Shortish length, Thirimanne goes for the pull but mistimes and gets an inside edge. The ball goes towards point and the batsmen run for a quick single. Franklin throws the ball at the non-striker's end. Taylor may have not collected the ball well but replays show the ball have dislodged the bails after the ball brushed his palms. Long call and finally the signal is OUT. We have a Super Over! 174/6

We have a very close call for the run out. If it's a wicket, get ready for a super over!

19.5 Tim Southee to L Thirimanne, FOUR! Ahhh! Full outside off, Thirmanne gets across once again and scoops it over that short fine leg fielder. The ball races away to the boundary rope. One run needed from the last ball. The Sri Lankan camp is punching their fist in the air. 174/5

19.4 Tim Southee to L Thirimanne, Play and a miss! Full outside off, Thirimanne tries to slash it to covers but fails to connect his bat on the ball. 170/5

19.3 Tim Southee to A Mathews, Full on the pads, Mathews whips it to mid-wicket for a single. 170/5

19.2 Tim Southee to L Thirimanne, Full and wide outside off, Thirimanne gets across for the scoop, the ball lands short of the short fine leg fielder. Single taken. 169/5

"Getting to be a cliff-hanger this; Kiwis have fought back splendidly after the early mayhem by Mahela and Dilshan" tweets Ayaz Memon.

19.1 Tim Southee to A Mathews, Fullish outside off, Mathews drives it through covers for a single. 168/5

Ayaz Memon tweets, "Didn't quite finish with flourish, but Kiwis have truly thrown the gauntlet at Lanka - 174 to win is a tough ask of any side..."

A good batting display from the Kiwis to post 174 on the board but the Lankans hit back hard at the death. Nicol went on to hit a brilliant half-century. The middle order supported him well but some spectacular bowling from Malinga and Kulasekara in the end made sure that the Kiwis could score just 41 runs off the last 5 overs. It's going to be a tricky chase for the Lions. Join us in a while for their chase!

19.6 N Kulasekara to K Williamson, OUT! Run out off the last ball! Fullish outside off, Williamson square drives it to deep point. They complete a single and set off for a suicidal second. The throw comes in from the deep and Sangakkara whips off the bails in a flash as Williamson is struggling and found short. The Kiwis end on 174/7! 174/7

19.5 N Kulasekara to J Franklin, Goes for a heave and hits it straight to mid-wicket for a single. 173/6

This is now New Zealand's highest Total in T20Is against Sri Lanka.

19.1 N Kulasekara to K Williamson, Slower delivery on middle, Williamson dances down the track for a loft but gets an inside edge onto the pads. They run through for a single. 166/6

The players are done with their national anthems. Martin Guptill and Rob Nicol are the two batsmen at the crease. Nuwan Kulasekara will start off proceedings for Sri Lanka.

Toss - New Zealand have won the toss and elected to bat. One change for them as Martin Guptill replaces Adam Milne. Two changes for Sri Lanka with Ajantha Mendis and Akila Dananjaya replacing Dilshan Munaweera and Rangana Herath.

Pitch report - It's nice and flat, getting drier, looks good for batting. Average score is around 175. There might be showers later.

It's a fresh start for both the teams, they had a roller coaster ride in the group stages having won one and lost one respectively. The Kiwis had a good outing with the bat and much will depend on how they perform against the Lankan spinners. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, would be looking to make amends in their batting department, their all-rounders will have a major role to play. Both the teams would be looking to get off the mark in the Super Eights with a victory. A cracker of a contest in definitely on cards.

Hello and welcome to the coverage of the first Super Eight match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at Pallekele.

Lahiru Thirimanne has been sent out to bat at number 7, replacing Perera. 8 needed from 6 balls! All three results possible! Do not rule out a super over!

17.5 N Kulasekara to J Oram, Goes back and whips it straight to mid-wicket. 159/4
