Commentary (Sri Lanka innings)

The bad news is the game will be played at this same venue and the forecast is not that promising again. Hopefully, we get a game. That is all from us. Until next time, on behalf of the commentators and scorers, Adios! Take Care!

Sri Lanka too, will not be overly disappointed, they were clearly the better team of the two. The one-off T20I is a no-result. What next? A 5-match ODI series starting from Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 0900 GMT (1430 IST).

The inevitable has been confirmed. After giving us some hope for nearly 4 hours of some interesting cricketing result, MATCH ABANDONED is all we get. The Kiwis would not mind it one bit, given that they were never in the game.

Roshan Abeysinghe tweeted a few minutes ago, "The cut off time for a restart is 10.58. At this rate d game is as good as finished." Absolutely. Probably time to say good night then.

Now this is a new one. SRI LANKA ARE 2 RUNS BEHIND ON THE D/L SHEETS! Of course, this does not count at this stage, as for a game to be constituted, a minimum of 5 overs need to be bowled.

The drizzle has turned into a heavy one now. Chances of a resumption look bleak but we never know - this is Sri Lanka. Rain and clear sky play cat and mouse games every time. Stay tuned for updates...

It is not coming down heavily but just enough to keep the players off the field. Interestingly, Kiwi skipper Ross Taylor is arguing with the two umpires about something but that seems strange, as the Kiwis would be the happier lot about the rain at the moment. The Sri Lankan dressing room is looking emotionless and motionless. It has been that sort of an evening.

And here we go again... the rain is back and so are the ground staff with the covers. This is frustrating. Needless to say.

1.6 J Oram to D Munaweera, MUNAWEERA DROPPED ON 3! By Ronnie Hira. Short outside off, 124.8 kph, Munaweera cuts it hard but straight to Hira at point. The fielder took it a touch easy and the ball came quickly at him and he spilled it. Hard luck for Oram. Not that this wicket would have mattered a lot, but at least, it would have boosted the Kiwi spirits. 6/0

1.5 J Oram to T Dilshan, Landed on middle, 123.5 kph, worked wide of mid-wicket for a run. 5/0

1.4 J Oram to T Dilshan, Punches this straight to mid off. Actually that was mistimed a touch. 4/0

1.3 J Oram to T Dilshan, Hmmm... gets set for the paddle scoop or the Dilscoop as one would call it, Oram bowls it full and wide outside off, 122.6 kph, gets it to swing away, Dilshan goes through with his shot and is beaten. Good decision from the umpire NOT to signal a wide. 4/0

STAT - The lowest total defended by a team in a rain-curtailed match is not surprisingly in a match of the minnows, Ireland vs Bermuda where the former defended 43 runs in a nine-over match.

1.2 J Oram to T Dilshan, Fuller length this time, 123.5 kph, driven straight to mid off. 4/0

1.1 J Oram to D Munaweera, Good length delivery on middle, Munaweera flicks it towards square leg for a single. 4/0

Jacob Oram to bowl from the other end. 69 needed from 78 balls.

0.6 K Mills to T Dilshan, Full outside off, 123.2 kph, Dilshan prods at it but gets beaten. 3/0

0.5 K Mills to T Dilshan, Similar ball, same reaction. 3/0

0.4 K Mills to T Dilshan, Full and straight, 126.3 kph, watchfully defended. 3/0

0.3 K Mills to D Munaweera, There is that movement, some away swing, Munaweera comes forward to defend but is beaten by the late movement. Gets a thick outside edge down to third man. One run added to the total. 69 needed from 81 balls now. 3/0

0.2 K Mills to T Dilshan, Good running again. Full outside off, 123.7 kph, Dilshan drives it towards mid off and sets off for a quick run. The fielder gets to the ball and attempts and under-arm flick at the bowler's end but misses. 2/0

The team batting second at this venue has won just 3 of the 12 T20Is played! Tonight one would feel that it would be the 4th victory though...

0.1 K Mills to D Munaweera, Full outside off, 123.1 kph, gently tapped towards point for a quick single. 1/0

Commentary (New Zealand innings)

A very good performance from the Lankans to restrict the Kiwis to a paltry total. The Kiwis lost Latham, McCullum and Nicol inside the Powerplay. They never got the momentum going from then on.

13.6 N Kulasekara to Tim Southee, Not out! Very full otuside off, Southee shuffles across and paddles it to short fine leg. They scamper through for a single. There is a direct hit at the striker's end but replays show that Oram was just in. Meanwhile, they run for another one on the overthrow. The Kiwis end on 74/7. 74/7

Appeal for a run out! The umpire has gone upstairs!

13.5 N Kulasekara to J Oram, Fullish outside off, Oram doesn't connect his loft well and gets a single to long off. 72/7

13.4 N Kulasekara to Tim Southee, Shuffles across and helps it to long on for one. 71/7

13.3 N Kulasekara to Tim Southee, Heaves it to long on and takes a couple. 70/7

13.2 N Kulasekara to Tim Southee, Good delivery Southee back away and Kulasekara delivers it very full outside off inside the wide guideline. 68/7

13.1 N Kulasekara to J Oram, Very full on the pads, Oram goes for a heave but gets an inside edge onto his pads. They run through for a single. 68/7

Kulasekara will bowl the final over of the innings.

12.6 S Eranga to Tim Southee, FOUR! Poor delivery and this time dispatched! Full toss on middle, Southee stays back and thumps it over mid-wicket for another boundary. A crucial little knock this from Southee so far. 16 runs off the over, all in boundaries! 67/7

12.5 S Eranga to Tim Southee, FOUR! Clever from Southee! Reads the slower delivery outside off very early. Shuffles across and paddles it past short fine leg for a well placed boundary. 63/7

12.4 S Eranga to Tim Southee, High full toss on middle and leg, Southee looks to heave but misses and gets hit on the thigh pads. 59/7

12.3 S Eranga to Tim Southee, FOUR! Lucky but it doesn't matter how they come at this stage! Good length delivery outside off, Southee goes for a heave but gets an outside edge over third man for a streaky boundary. 59/7

12.2 S Eranga to Tim Southee, FOUR! Brilliant shot for Southee! Good length delivery outside off, Southee stands tall and just punches it over extra cover for a boundary. 55/7

12.1 S Eranga to Tim Southee, Low full toss on middle, Southee helps it straight to mid-wicket. 51/7

Eranga back on!

11.6 A Dananjaya to J Oram, Very full and quick outside off, Oram digs it out to the off side. 51/7

11.5 A Dananjaya to J Oram, Loopy outside off, Oram opens the face of the bat and steers it to short third man. 51/7

Tim Southee is the new batsman.

11.4 A Dananjaya to A Ellis, OUT! The only player who was looking good for the Kiwis departs! Good length delivery outside off, spins back in after landing. Ellis goes down on one knee for a heave, doesn't connect it well and helps it straight into the hands of Thirimanne at deep mid-wicket. 51/7

Jacob Oram played a massive role in the Sri Lankan Premier League held earlier. Can he put his knowledge of these conditions to good use? Better question - how far will it help the Kiwis?

11.3 A Dananjaya to J Oram, Fullish outside off, Oram backs away and rams it uppishly to long off for a single. 51/6

11.2 A Dananjaya to A Ellis, Dances down the track and heaves it to long on for a run. 50/6

11.1 A Dananjaya to J Oram, Chips down the track, converts it into a half volley and thumps it to mid off but just for a single. 49/6

10.6 T Perera to A Ellis, SIX! Thumped and Ellis rams the first six of the innings! A tad short outside off, Ellis rocks back and pulls it with disdain over mid-wicket for a maximum. 48/6

Oh dear... it has started to drizzle again... No please, this is frustrating. Play continues though.

10.5 T Perera to J Oram, Stands tall and punches a good length delivery outside off to deep cover for just a single. 42/6

10.4 T Perera to A Ellis, Good length delivery outside off, Ellis stays back and dabs it to third man for a single. 41/6

10.3 T Perera to A Ellis, FOUR! A much, much needed boundary for the Kiwis! Fullish outside off, Ellis gets down on one knee and slices it past point for a well placed boundary. 40/6

10.2 T Perera to A Ellis, Lucky runs! Good length delivery outside off, Ellis dances down the track for a slap but gets an inside edge to fine leg for a couple. 36/6

A 14-over game, 4 bowlers can bowl a maximum of 3 overs each. The Powerplay for the Lankan innings will be of 4 overs. Can the Black Caps get to a total which they can at least hope to defend?

10.1 T Perera to A Ellis, Length delivery outside off, Ellis comes forward and pushes it to covers. 34/6

9.6 A Dananjaya to A Ellis, Chips down the track and pats it to the leg side for a single. 34/6

9.4 A Dananjaya to J Oram, FOUR! Poor delivery to followup with! Fullish on the pads, Oram just nudges it past short fine leg for a well placed boundary to get off the mark. 32/6

Jacob Oram is the new batsman.

9.3 A Dananjaya to B Watling, OUT! Another Kiwi departs in single figures! Length delivery on off, spins back in. Watling sits down for a sweep but gets a top edge to short fine leg where Chandimal pouches it safely. 28/6

Dananjaya into the attack now.

8.6 T Perera to B Watling, Good length delivery, wide outside off, Watling stays back and punches it to deep cover for three. The fielder does well in the deep to slide to his right and save a run. 28/5

8.5 T Perera to A Ellis, Fullish delivery outside off, Ellis drives it straight to covers. 25/5

It will be a 14 over a side game.

Okay... we get the news that the game is about to resume soon and the players are already warming up in the middle... Fingers crossed...

Whenever these two sides have stepped on to the ground to play a T20I, it has always yielded a result. Hopefully, tonight is also the same. In 10 encounters, New Zealand have won 5 times and one game has been tied, recently in the 2012 WT20. Interestingly, Sri Lanka have never won a T20I against New Zealand at home. Of course, they beat New Zealand in the WT20 2012 but that was through a Super Over. Stay tuned for updates...

Well! Some bad news. It has started drizzling out in the middle and the players are off! The covers are coming on! Stay tuned for further updates.

8.4 T Perera to A Ellis, Probing delivery on a length area outside off, Ellis leaves it alone cautiously. 24/5

Andrew Ellis strides in! The lowest total for New Zealand in T20Is is 81, against Sri Lanka at Lauderhill in the USA. Can they surpass that score tonight?

8.3 T Perera to R Taylor, OUT! The skipper's gone and the Kiwis are in dire straits now! Good length delivery outside off at 130.4 kph, Taylor rocks back for a cut but gets a thin outside edge to Sangakkara who makes no mistake. A poor shot at a crucial juncture! 24/5

First T20I then, for BJ Watling against Sri Lanka. Not the greatest of games to be part of, at least now. He will need to anchor the innings along with his captain and get somewhat of a decent total on board.

8.2 T Perera to R Taylor, Good length delivery outside off, it straightens a tad after landing. Taylor is squared up and defends it to the off side. 24/4

8.1 T Perera to R Taylor, A tad short outside off, Taylor rocks back and cuts it straight to point. 24/4

7.1 S Eranga to B Watling, Play and a miss! Good length delivery outside off, swinging away. Watling looks to force it through the off side but misses. 20/4

Brilliant bowling by the Lankans to restrict the Kiwis to 16/3 in the Powerplay! The lowest team score in a game involving these two sides in a T20I is 81 by New Zealand at Lauderhill, in USA in 2010. Even there, the Powerplay score by the Black Caps was 17/5!

6.6 T Perera to B Watling, Stays back and guides a back of a length delivery outside off to third man for a single. 20/4

6.6 T Perera to B Watling, WIDE! Delivers it way outside off, Watling leaves it alone. 19/4

BJ Watling is the new batsman.

6.5 T Perera to J Franklin, OUT! Poor shot from Franklin! That delivery needed to be dispatched! Length delivery way outside the leg stump at 131.9 kph, Franklin looks to flick but gets a thin edge behind. Sangakkara dives to his right and pouches a smart catch. The Lankans are striking gold in almost every over here! 18/4

6.4 T Perera to R Taylor, Good single! Good length delivery on middle, Taylor just pats it with soft hands to the off side and scampers through for a quick single. 18/3

6.3 T Perera to J Franklin, Drifts a length delivery onto his pads, Franklin clips it to fine leg and takes a single. 17/3

5.4 S Eranga to J Franklin, Beautiful delivery in the corridor of uncertainty, Franklin leaves it alone. 15/3

5.3 S Eranga to Rob Nicol, OUT! LBW! Nicol departs now and the Kiwis are in some trouble! Fullish delivery on off at 134.1 kph, it nips back in a tad. Nicol stays in his crease and looks to flick but misses it completely. The ball hits his pads and the umpire lifts his finger. Shaminda has a wicket in his first over! 15/3

5.2 S Eranga to R Taylor, Stays back and turns it towards square leg for a single. 15/2

5.1 S Eranga to R Taylor, Good length delivery on off, Taylor defends it to the off side. 14/2

5.1 S Eranga to R Taylor, WIDE! Starts off with a loosener down the leg side. Taylor leaves it alone. 14/2

Shaminda Eranga into the attack now.

This is a very slow start by the Kiwis. Almost next to nothing. If they go on at this rate, they will not even cross 50 at the end of 20 overs!

4.6 A Mathews to R Taylor, Looks to turn it to the leg side but gets a slight leading edge to the off side for a single. 13/2

4.5 A Mathews to R Taylor, Length delivery on off, Taylor looks to turn it to the leg side but misses and gets hit on the pads. 12/2

3.2 N Kulasekara to Rob Nicol, WIDE! But very close to the leg stump! Good length delivery on middle, it nips back in sharply towards the leg side. Nicol again misses his flick and it flies inches past the leg stump. 9/1

Meanwhile, the drizzle has started again but the umpires have decided to continue.

McCullum is late on the shot as he tries to turn it to the leg side and gets hit on the pads. The players appeal but the umpire says no. Meanwhile, they run through for a leg bye. Sri Lanka - Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dilshan Munaweera, Kumar Sangakkara(Wk), Angelo Mathews(C), Dinesh Chandimal, Jeevan Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Akila Dananjaya Perera, Shaminda Eranga.

New Zealand - Rob Nicol, Tom Latham, Brendon McCullum(Wk), Ross Taylor(C), James Franklin, BJ Watling, Andrew Ellis, Jacob Oram, Tim Southee, Ronnie Hira, Kyle Mills.

Toss - Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to field. Mathews informs that Dinesh Chandimal and Shaminda Eranga are included in the starting eleven. While, Sachithra Senanayake sits out. Ross Taylor says that he too would have bowled first with the rain around and the kind of wicket. Informs that Tom Latham is included in the team along with BJ Watling.

Pitch - The track is a lot darker with a few cracks. Not a typical Sri Lankan wicket. The fast bowlers will enjoy bowling on this wicket and will get the ball to move with the wind around.

The Lankans are starting afresh after the World Twenty20 under the captaincy of Angelo Mathews and in the absence of Lasith Malinga, Mahela Jayawardena and Ajantha Mendis, the youngsters have to step up and perform. New Zealand, on the other hand, had an average World Twenty20 and they would be aiming for improvement in this only T20 game.

Hello and a warm welcome to all our viewers and thank you for tuning in to the coverage of the only T20I between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy. Thankfully the rain has stopped and we are in for a full match, no overs have been lost.
