Commentary (Sri Lanka innings)

It has been a great tournament, plenty of excitement and fun. That's it from us. Hope you enjoyed our coverage throughout. The CLT20 qualifiers start day after, so make sure you don't miss out on another thrilling tournament. Good bye!

Darren Sammy collects the winner's trophy and there is some crazy piece of celebration in the middle. Gayle has gone wild, along with Samuels, Russell, Bravo and others. This is pretty much expected though. They now take the victory lap while the Lankans are no where in the vicinity.

The West Indies side receives their winning medals and you know there are a few crazy players in there. Chris Gayle takes it with a few dancing moves. Darren Sammy follows it up with a fine interview, stating hopefully this is a step in the right direction and this team will go on to do a lot more in the future.

There were some serious contenders for the Player of the Tournament award with Chris Gayle doing well for West Indies and Ajantha Mendis doing brilliantly for Sri Lanka. But it's Shane Watson who gets the award for his amazing all-round show in the competition. Runs, wickets and four straight MOM awards.

Marlon Samuels is the Man of the Match for his all-round show today. An innings to which if we add context, can be counted as one of the best T20I knocks. He has had a really great year personally and this award is just like icing on the cake.

The match officials collect their piece of memento. Umpire Simon Taufel ends his umpiring career today and he is joined by his family in the middle. Jayawardena and team collect their runners-up medals.

They started as dark horses in the tournament and many considered them favourites too, considering the line-up they boasted. In the end, it all comes good on the day and West Indies are crowned the fourth ICC World Twenty20 champions. Sri Lanka were surely one of the favourites and did well throughout without passing the final hurdle of course.

It was a fine game of T20 cricket. A slow start for West Indies, looked they had lost it then itself but Samuels pulled off a stunning knock. Sri Lanka would have felt they had a decent target to chase but they messed it up completely. Their batting failed miserably and eventually they ended 36 runs short. Narine and Sammy were great with the ball and Samuels chipped in nicely too. A major ICC title for West Indies after 8 years and this win should do a great deal for West Indies cricket.

The Gangnam dance is on now! The West Indies players arrange themselves in a straight line and begin their celebration. Each member joins in from the team, coaching staff and everyone gets in the middle to enjoy. There is a bit of silence in the stands though. Have to feel for the home fans. Sri Lanka were really disappointing in the chase.

18.4 S Narine to L Malinga, OUT! WEST INDIES ARE THE CHAMPIONS! There it is! The Caribbean flair has worked! West Indies are the winners of the ICC World Twenty20, 2012 and amazing scenes in the middle. Malinga swings and miscues it high in the air towards long on. Bravo takes another good catch and the celebrations have already started in the middle. 101/10

17.4 M Samuels to L Malinga, Gives himself room and swings it down to long on for a run. 100/8

17.3 M Samuels to A Mendis, Clips it uppishly down to wide mid-wicket for a single. 99/8

17.2 M Samuels to L Malinga, Low full toss, belted down to long off for a single. 98/8

17.1 M Samuels to L Malinga, Bowls a full delivery on leg, Malinga misses the whip. He is struck on the pads. 97/8

Samuels back on.

16.6 S Narine to L Malinga, Bowls it down the leg side, Malinga works it down to short fine leg. There is a throw at the non-striker's end but Mendis was in. The square leg umpire confirms with the third umpire to just be sure. 97/8

Ajantha Mendis walks in next.

16.3 S Narine to N Kulasekara, OUT! That perhaps ends Sri Lanka's final hope of victory. Short ball outside off, 96.7 kph, Kulasekara went hard with a slice over cover, lack of elevation and he picks out Samuel Badree in the deep. 96/8

15.5 R Rampaul to N Kulasekara, FOUR! This is great for Sri Lanka, another turn in this match? A good length delivery outside off, Kulasekara goes hard and gets a thick outside edge down. 15.1 R Rampaul to N Kulasekara, Short of a length, Kulasekara pulls it down to fine leg and takes one. 73/7

Lasith Malinga walks in next.

14.3 D Sammy to L Thirimanne, OUT! Another Lankan bites the dust! A full and slow delivery, 104.2 kph, Thirimanne sits down and slogs that one high in the air. Johnson Charles at long on takes the catch and West Indies are now inches away from glory. 69/7

14.2 D Sammy to L Thirimanne, A touch short, around off, kicks off with some bounce, Thirimanne misses and the ball just misses the off stump. Sammy appeals for a caught-behind. None from the umpire. 69/6

14.1 D Sammy to N Kulasekara, Chance of a run-out! How many more would Sri Lanka give? A full length delivery, punched down towards long off. Kulasekara sets off for the second but Thirimanne calls it no. The throw from Charles is at the wrong end, the keeper's end. 69/6

Lahiru Thirimanne walks in now.

12.3 S Narine to T Perera, OUT! This is catastrophic from Sri Lanka. Completely uncalled for by Perera. A short delivery, Perera whacks it down through mid off, the ball goes straight to Bravo who fires a quick throw back. Perera wants two but Mendis does not. He dives in late but Narine is quick to whip the bails off. Third umpire confirms the same and WI are having a firm grip on the match now. 61/5

There is an appeal for run-out! Gone upstairs!

Thisara Perera walks in next.

12.1 S Narine to M J'dena, OUT! That is the main, main, main wicket today. Mahela Jayawardena seemed to have seen rain on the radar and had been taking on Badree in the last over. Follows the same pattern with Narine but it back fires on him. A flighted delivery, 89.7 kph, turns in and Jayawardena attempts the reverse-sweep, as both men were inside the circle, mistimed it and Sammy accepts the catch of his counter-part with utmost glee. 60/4

Sunil Narine is the bowling change. The D/L par score should be 82.

11.2 S Badree to M J'dena, Dropped by Andre Russell! A very good attempt there from him. Outside off, and full, Jayawardena sees the chance and whacks it over mid on. Russell charges down from the ropes, gets both hands to it but puts it down. Two runs. 55/3

11.1 S Badree to M J'dena, Gets into the position for the reverse-sweep but mistimes it towards point. 53/3

Mahela Jayawardena just had a look at the D/L sheet. At the end of the 12th over, the D/L score should be 76 and SL are nowhere near that. Is rain on the radar? Is Mahela going to take on Badree?

Angelo Mathews walks in next.

9.3 S Badree to K Sangakkara, OUT! Sangakkara departs at a very crucial time! A short delivery from Badree, down the leg side, Sangakkara makes room, opens up the leg side and whacks it over mid-wicket. Goes low towards Kieron Pollard who does well to get low and is super joyed by the catch. 48/2

Commentary (West Indies innings)

137 might still be below par on this surface and Sri Lanka will start this chase as favourites. Though, a couple of good overs can turn the tide. Interesting action coming up. Stay tuned...

West Indies have made a fine recovery to reach 137/6 in their 20 overs, after a poor, poor start. They just couldn't get started and lost Gayle early too but Samuels played a scintillating knock to give them hope. Over 100 runs in the last 10 overs to reach a challenging total. Sammy played a good hand at the death. Mathews provided a great start and Mendis was on top of his game, brilliant figures.

19.6 N Kulasekara to D Sammy, FOUR! Good way to end! Kulasekara bowls full on the middle, Sammy crashes it straight back and it goes like a whistle. No chance for long on or long off. 137/6

Sammy is warned for running on the middle of the pitch and even one short is signalled.

19.5 N Kulasekara to D Sammy, Kulasekara bowls it full again, Sammy drills it down to long off and somehow manages a couple again. The throw strikes him direct on the helmet. 133/6

19.3 N Kulasekara to D Sammy, Pitched up, driven down to long off for a couple of runs. Excellent running. 130/6

19.2 N Kulasekara to D Sammy, FOUR! Bowls a slower one, short on the middle, Sammy turns and swats it through wide mid-wicket off the back foot. One bounce into the fence. The fielder in the deep can't do much. 128/6

19.1 N Kulasekara to D Sammy, Shortish, pulled through mid-wicket for a couple. It wasn't timed well. 124/6

It has been a great tournament, plenty of excitement and fun. That's it from us. Hope you enjoyed our coverage throughout. The CLT20 qualifiers start day after, so make sure you don't miss out on another thrilling tournament. Good bye!

18.2 S Narine to L Malinga, Malinga drags it down to long on and doesn't take the run. 101/9

18.1 S Narine to L Malinga, Too full, on the middle, driven back. 101/9

18.6 L Malinga to D Sammy, Malinga ends his spell with a fine yorker, Sammy digs it out and runs. 122/6

18.5 L Malinga to D Sammy, Sammy lofts that one over extra covers and the ball lands safely with three fielders converging. The batsmen run a couple. 121/6

18.4 L Malinga to D Ramdin, Gives himself room and slices it down to third man for a single. 119/6

18.3 L Malinga to D Sammy, In the block hole again, mistimed towards short fine leg for a single. 118/6

18.2 L Malinga to D Sammy, FOUR! How did Sammy score off that one? Malinga bowls a deadly yorker, between the legs, Sammy just gets his bat down and finds an inside edge which races away. 117/6

18.1 L Malinga to D Ramdin, Too full, Ramdin gives himself room and pushes it through the covers for a single. 113/6

Here we go in the finals...

Time to get going. Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles are the openers. A dangerous batting pair. Angelo Mathews to start with the new ball.

The players are out in the middle for their respective national anthems. Umpire Taufel is in the middle too who is about to officiate in his last international game.

West Indies are going in unchanged, which was pretty much expected. Mahela Jayawardena announces one change, a tough one in leaving out Herath for Dananjaya. Sri Lanka are obviously looking to counter the Gayle-factor.

The news out from the middle is that Darren Sammy has won the toss again and West Indies will bat first. He feels it's a similar track and putting runs on the board is the way to go. He also wishes Dwayne Bravo on his 29th birthday.

The wicket looks decent, a new strip for the finals. It's dry with a few cracks and Arnold (on air) feels 160-170 is a must for the side batting first.

The atmosphere is great, already electrifying with the home side coming out in full numbers to support their side. The weather is clear for now, though there is a bit of rain scare.

This is West Indies' first final appearance in an ICC World Cup since 1983 and they'll look to score on the opportunity. Sri Lanka have never lost to West Indies in T20Is and they'll look to that statistic as a source of inspiration.

It's the final of the ICC World Twenty20 2012! The dark horse of the tournament, West Indies, have made it to the finals along with the home side Sri Lanka. Promises to be a great game with two evenly matched sides taking on each other.
