Commentary (Zimbabwe innings)

Ajantha Mendis is named the MAN OF THE MATCH for his outstanding spell of (4-2-8-6). That's all we have for today in the opening day of the World Twenty 20. Do join us tomorrow for two matches, first between Australia and Ireland at 1530 local time and then, India and Afghanistan at 1930 local time. Till then, farewell!

Sri Lanka put up a dominating show with the bat and ball, and look strong in home conditions. The conditions here do give you the feeling that it's a win toss-bowl first situation as dew should be a major impact. Zimbabwe on the other hand, need to assess the biggest sub-continental threat, spin and come back strongly to face the mighty Proteas.

That ends a lop-sided first match of the ICC World Twenty 20 and ends up giving Zimbabwe their 13th loss on the trot. Many touted Zimbabwe to post a good show but many would also understand their struggle against top-quality spin in alien conditions. Ajantha Mendis finished with the best figures ever in a World Twenty 20 match, and along with Jeevan Mendis, compiled nine wickets of the total 10.

Commentary (Sri Lanka innings)

Sri Lanka had too many let offs today and they made sure they punished Zimbabwe for the same with a commanding first innings total. Dilshan played well for his gritty knock, Munaweera looked scratchy on his international debut and failed to make utmost use of the missed opportunities. But the main runs came in the partnership between Sangakkara and J Mendis. Zimbabwe have a lot to do to scale down 183. They need their batting to fire big time.

19.6 C Mpofu to T Perera, Excellent. Full this time again, Perera is way too late into that shot but does not take the bye for some reason. 182/4

19.5 C Mpofu to T Perera, SIX! He comes, he delivers straightaway! A fuller ball angled in, Perera gets underneath it and slogs it away over square leg. Amazing bottom-hand display there. 182/4

Thisara Perera walks in to bat.

19.4 C Mpofu to K Sangakkara, OUT! Run out! Third of the innings! A full ball outside off, Sangakkara strokes it through covers, there is no second run but Sangakkara does take it. Taylor whips the bails off from a good one-bounce throw from Waller. End of a fine innings from Sangakkara. 176/4

19.3 C Mpofu to K Sangakkara, SIX! This goes all the way into the stands! A fuller ball, Sangakkara flicks it well enough, gets the height to clear the square leg fence. 175/3

19.2 C Mpofu to J Mendis, Sangakkara gives the charge, the ball is full on middle and he middles it away through covers to take one. 169/3

19.1 C Mpofu to K Sangakkara, Low full toss on middle, heaved down to long on for just one. 168/3

Chris Mpofu to bowl the final over.

18.6 K Jarvis to K Sangakkara, Another full toss, heaved away through mid-wicket. This time just for a single to end the over. 167/3

18.5 K Jarvis to J Mendis, Low full toss, flicked away to square leg. Good fielding there, first time witnessed today. 166/3

18.4 K Jarvis to J Mendis, Pitched up again, tucked away wide off mid-wicket. They come back for two this time. 165/3

18.3 K Jarvis to J Mendis, Full ball, hit down through long off. Jarvis does not collect the throw cleanly and that allows another extra run. Really poor stuff from the African unit today. 163/3

18.3 K Jarvis to K Sangakkara, No-ball for height! A waist-height full toss, heaved down to long on for a single. 161/3

18.2 K Jarvis to K Sangakkara, FOUR! Fine shot. Length outside off, Sangakkara slices it through point this time for a boundary. 159/3

18.1 K Jarvis to J Mendis, FIVE LEG BYES! And the appaling fielding continues. A full ball, Mendis goes to scoop but is hit on the pads. The batsmen steal a quick one, Jarvis runs towards the ball but throws waywardly, well outside the reach of Taylor. 155/3

17.3 B Vitori to K Sangakkara, Full ball again, Sangakkara steps down the track and heaves it down to long on. They run well to come back for the second even as the throw is good from Sibanda in the deep. 143/3

17.2 B Vitori to J Mendis, Mendis charges, takes the ball on the full and pats it away down to long on for one. 141/3

17.1 B Vitori to K Sangakkara, Fuller length at 129.9 kph, drilled through long on for a single. 140/3

The two Dilshans now walk out to the middle. Tillakaratne Dilshan and the debutant Dilshan Munaweera are the openers for Sri Lanka. Brendan Taylor holds a meeting via a huddle. Let's hope for a competitive match. Kyle Jarvis will have the new ball. PLAY!

Time for the national anthems to be played now. There is no opening ceremony for this big event. The players now walk on the field along with small kids, hand-picked by the ICC.

TOSS - Mahela Jayawardena spins the coin. Taylor calls it right and ZIMBABWE WILL BOWL FIRST! Says that it is good to know the total to be scaled down. Hopes that they capitalize today and come up with a good result. Mahela Jayawardena says that he may have wanted to bat first. Dilshan Munaweera will make his INTERNATIONAL DEBUT!

PITCH REPORT - There is grass on the pitch but not the ones where the seamers would extract the best juice out of it. Sanjay Manjrekar predicts that the team winning the toss would want to bowl first.

Here we are! After not so much hype going into this tournament, unlike the ones we have seen before, the ICC World Twenty 20 will kick off now with the hosts Sri Lanka taking on Zimbabwe at Hambantota. There are plenty of interesting matches coming up in this mega event and hopefully for the sake of pure competition, a few upsets to be witnessed. As seen on the television, the conditions looks windy and that could aid the bowlers.

Lasith Malinga comes back on.

16.6 J Mendis to C Mpofu, A very well flighted up delivery, turns out to be the googly, Mpofu goes for the big hit initially but in the end decides to just block that and still misses to get an inside edge onto the pads. 93/9

Chris Mpofu is the last man to walk in.

16.5 J Mendis to G Cremer, OUT! Bowled him! This is a turning out to be a nightmare for the Rhodesian side. A flat delivery, 93.9 kph, turns away a hint and Cremer is beaten by that to get castled. 93/9

16.4 J Mendis to G Cremer, Short and skids on, Cremer flicks it away through mid-wicket for a quick couple. An attempt of a run-out at the non-striker's end but Mendis does not collect it well. 93/8
