Commentary (West Indies innings)

Samuels is the man of the moment, but is has been some exceptional bowling performance by the Kiwis. 3 wickets apiece for Boult and Bracewell while Southee and Wagner bagged 2 each. The 4-pronged pace attack came to the party. Well, on this pitch, the lead of 51 could be a handful. Can the Kiwis consolidate the same by going in to stumps without any damage? Stay tuned for the answer...

New Zealand will be a bit disappointed with the way the innings ended but if truth be told, they were on top for a major portion, till Darren Sammy came along. The duo of Samuels and Sammy launched a counter-attack, else, the Kiwis could have got a massive lead. Samuels' knock of 123 stands out like a beacon in the team total of 209.

64.3 D Bracewell to Samuels, OUT! That is a stunning catch! End of a wonderful innings from Samuels. Length delivery outside off, 135.3 kph, Samuels backs away to the leg side and smashes hard but Wagner at the deep point region times his jump to perfection and takes it brilliantly over his head. 37.3 Tim Southee to M Samuels, SAFE. In fact it is a DROPPED CHANCE. Full outside off, 133.2 kph, Samuels plays a loose drive and gets a thick outside edge. The ball flies wide of McCullum at third slip who dives to his right and seems to take the catch and the rest of the action is covered by his body. McCullum is not sure about the catch, Samuels is not going anywhere and the umpires involve the third umpire. Replays show that the ball has slipped off McCullum's right hand. I don't think that the fielder would not have realized that he had put it down. 83/5

Welcome back. After a really trying opening session, we hope for a bit of some action in the second. Not that there was no action in the morning. Three wickets were picked up but otherwise, the game seemed to be at a standstill. Outstanding bowling from the Kiwis, they will aim to maintain the same. The Windies, on the other hand, espcially Samuels, could look to score some quick runs, be positive and make Taylor go on the defensive.

Day 2, session 2...

Looks like it will be a tough time for the batsmen but while Samuels is trying to get settled, Chanderpaul looks like he has been batting here for ages. That's how confidently he is timing the ball. Join us back at 1740 GMT (2310 IST).

An attritional session. The Kiwis gave nothing away and picked up three wickets, which included the big one of Gayle, in spite of dropping him early on. The batsmen have struggled and the score has gone nowhere. Just 51 runs in the 25 overs.

PITCH REPORT - The cracks have opened up today. But the Kiwis do not have any regular spinner to exploit the same. Otherwise, it looks a pretty good surface to bat on.

Tino Best was having a chat with Fazeer Mohammaed yesterday. Was very happy with his efforts and his team's position in this game. On aggression, he smiles that he is usually cool and calm outside the field but on the field, he always likes to be aggressive. Wants to keep believing in himself and push harder. Admits that he understands the game a lot more now. At the end of the day, he wants to keep his head still. Has a lot of pace, so not strive for it, just concentrate on the job on hand and not get distracted. Hopes that his batsmen bat the whole day today and dominate. Smiles on being reminded about his 95 and says that he just wants to bat decently if given an opportunity.

WEATHER - There are a few clouds around but nothing threatening. Could be another start-stop day though.

It was a day of twists and turns as New Zealand, not for the first time on this tour, squandered away a good start. The Windies are well in front of this Test match and will look to bat, bat and bat for today and tomorrow. Can New Zealand spice up this game by picking up a few early wickets offering a fight? Let's hope so and get a good match...

Day 2, session 1...

That's it for the day then. A disappointing one for the Kiwis and they can only redeem themselves by picking up wickets consistently tomorrow. Because if they don't, this match and series will start slipping away around this time tomorrow. We take your leave for now. Join us back at 1500 GMT (2030 IST) for the first session of Day 2. Also, there is some action from the second England-South Africa Test match which you can look forward to. On behalf of the commentators and scorers, Adios! Take Care!

A day which finishes in West Indies' favour because of that mind-boggling final session from the Kiwis. The hosts have managed to see off those 5 overs and have added 11 on the board. Plenty of time left in this Test match and have a look at the match situation - 4 days, all wickets intact, a pitch beginning to look good and the momentum from the excellent innings at Antigua. Prepare yourselves for a run fest folks.

Commentary (New Zealand innings)

Full marks to the Windies for probing hard on a flat deck with plenty of turn, seam movement and bounce. Roach led from the front with a 4-wicket haul while Best struck at the start with 2 wickets and Deonarine chipped in too. Around 5 overs to go till stumps. Don't suspect West Indies will try anything fancy but if anything is in the hitting zone, guess they will go for it as well. Stay tuned...

An abject batting display by the Kiwis. They did not have control over the first two dismissals, thanks to some excellent fast bowling, but after some wonderful fightback by Guptill and Taylor and being at such a nice position at Tea, they have simply thrown it away. They slumped from 161/3 to 225/9 and this whole session could be the match-turning point for them.

82.5 K Roach to Wagner, OUT! Caught! Eventually West Indies get the last wicket. Excellent short ball on middle, 139.7 kph, Wagner goes for the pull but miscues this miles up in the air. The ball has not gone far and Best takes an easy catch at mid-wicket. NEW ZEALAND BOWLED OUT FOR 260! 260/10

The ball has been changed.

DRINKS BREAK. This one session could very well prove to be a decisive one for the Kiwis. They have already lost 5 wickets in this session and with 13 overs left, stand a chance of getting bowled out tonight itself. Just 3 overs to go for the second new ball. Suspect, with that one expensive over from Deonarine, either Samuels or one of the seamers might replace him.

The ball goes right through the gap between bat and pad and knocks the top of off stump. van Wyk looks at the place where the ball landed but that was pure misjudgement. He departs for 16, NEW ZEALAND 202/8! 202/8

74.2 Deonarine to Wyk, Wasted review. Landed outside off, 74.8 kph, van Wyk shoulders arms and the ball spins back in to hit his pads. The Windies think that it is a close one but umpire Erasmus shoulders his arms. Hawk Eye shows the ball to be going over the top. 202/7

Tossed up outside off, 89 kph, Bracewell lunges forward to defend but the ball spins in, bounces and goes of the inside edge to short leg. Interestingly, van Wyk signals to Bracwell to take the review for the no ball and after a lot of replays, it is clear that Narine has overstepped.

DRINKS BREAK. What a turnaround. After struggling to pick up wickets consistently in the first two sessions, West Indies have picked up 3/22 in 13 overs in the past one hour. All have been soft dismissals and really, Guptill's and Taylor's knocks might have just done enough to give the Kiwi total some respetability. Nothing else. Another batting collapse. The duo of Roach and Best have been brilliant while Deonarine has been the surprise package.

Oh dear... and a delay first up. One of the advertisement hoardings is reflecting bright sunshine and that is causing a problem to the batsmen. A bit of a hold up then. One of those occasions when too sunny does not help you. Okay, ready then.

The Kiwi openers walk out as well and surprisingly, it is Watling to open with Guptill. Kemar Roach has got the new ball in his hand. Watling to face. All set! Here we go!

The players are out in the middle! The Windies are in a huddle. Now, they disperse.

TEAMS - NEW ZEALAND - Guptill, B.McCullum, R Taylor(c), Williamson, Brownlie, Watling, K van Wyk(wk), Bracewell, Wagner, Boult and Southee. WEST INDIES - Gayle, K.Powell, Fudadin, Samuels, Chanderpaul, Deonarine, Ramdin(wk), Sammy(c), Narine, Roach and Best.

TEAM NEWS - New Zealand have made three changes. Injured Vettori and the injured Flynn miss out while Chris Martin has been left out. In come Tim Southee, Trent Boult and BJ Watling. Interestingly, no Nethula. West Indies have made the sole change, bringing in Tino Best for the injured Ravi Rampaul.

TOSS - West Indies skipper Darren Sammy spins the coin, New Zealand captain Ross Taylor calls Tails but it comes up as a HEAD. WEST INDIES WILL FIELD. Sammy informs that Tino Best comes in for the injured Rampaul as they wanted to go in with the same winning formula as in the first game. Adds that the aim has always been to win both Test matches and will remain the same. Taylor informs that Vettori and Flynn are injured and Boult and Southee come in. Watling, who had a good form in the ODIs, will come in too. Informs that Chris Martin misses out as they wanted to give two fresh bowlers a chance. Adds that they have got nothing to lose and will look to play well.

PITCH REPORT - The colour is browner than normal. Looks to have some extra moisture. Might have something for the seamers. Also, rain is predicted. If we have a start-stop game, better to be bowling first.

WEATHER - There was heavy overnight rain which might have wet the outfield a touch. But we are in for a scheduled start.

Hello and a warm welcome to the second Test between West Indies and New Zealand at Jamaica! It was a disappointing first game for the Kiwis but they showed some fight in that match. The batting has a lot of issues and needs a proper working over. West Indies have no such problem and will aim to have another clinical display and win the series 2-0! Sit back and enjoy as the game unfolds!

The players are back out in the middle. 38 overs left. Can the Kiwis end the day on a high? If they bat decently, they should reach around 230. They were in a similar position in the first Test on the first day but they made a mess of it in that final session. West Indies would be hoping for a repeat.

Day 1, session 3...

Not a bad session for New Zealand. They did lose the wicket of Taylor but have managed to add 78 runs in 25 overs. Guptill is batting beautifully on 62 while Williamson has got a start. Can the duo carry on? The bowling is looking a bit tired apart from Tino Best, who is running in and giving his best on every ball. 38 overs left in the day. Join us back at 2000 GMT (0130 IST)...

We are ready for resumption. The players are already out in the middle. Kemar Roach to begin proceedings after Lunch. 6-1-26-1 so far. Taylor to face. All set! Here we go!

Woohoo! The covers are being taken off and the stumps are being put in! Also, the sun is peeking out as well...

The covers are back on. Just as a precaution though. The ground staff are in the middle. According to the forecast, a thundershower is due sometime in the afternoon.

Day 1, session 2... We are back. Thankfully, the rain has gone away and so have the clouds. It is bright and sunny out there.

OOPS.... we get the news that the drizzle has turned into rain. Hope that it does not delay the proceedings after Lunch...

Guptill and Taylor have weathered the storm and soldiered on. The pitch looks a pretty good one to bat on but there is plenty on it for the bowlers. The seamers are enjoying the bounce while the spinners are getting good turn. Join us back at 1740 GMT (2310 IST) for the second session. Hope the drizzle blows off by then.

Honours shared in this session. But considering that the Kiwis were 11/2, it has been a very good comeback from the Kiwis. Roach and Best exploited all the movement off the surface and dismissed the two batsmen. Sammy just couldn't pile the pressure on and then Roach lost his line and length.

CRICKET STAT - The last time New Zealand played a Test match without Daniel Vettori and Chris Martin was in September 2000. It was against Zimbabwe at Harare and the Kiwis won by 8 wickets.

DRINKS BREAK. Well well well. Turn and bounce for Sunil Narine in his very first over. He will be licking his lips. Not too sure about Guptill or Taylor or any other Kiwi batsman. The visitors are in a strife but it has been a decent recovery so far. The over-rate is abysmal.

Marlon Samuels walks in at number 4, replacing Fudadin.

10.4 Boult to Fudadin, OUT! LBW! The decision is reversed! Gosh, that was a beautiful delivery. Pitched up to the batsman, 132 kph, Fudadin looked to flick but the front foot went absolutely nowhere and he missed his flick. Was hit right in front. There were two noises and probably that is why umpire Erasmus shook his head. Taylor had a chat with his team and took the review and replays showed that there was no inside edge. Going on to hit the leg stump. The decision is conveyed to the batsman and Fudadin trudges back slowly for 5, WEST INDIES 17/2, TRAIL BY 243! 17/2

Huge appeal for LBW against Fudadin. Not given and New Zealand take the review.

10.3 T Boult to Fudadin, Another leave outside the off stump. 17/1

10.2 T Boult to Fudadin, Wide outside off, 133.2 kph, left alone. 17/1

Sunil Narine into the attack now, replacing Sammy.

10.6 K Roach to Taylor, FOUR! Violence! May be, Roach should take a break. Back to back short deliveries, back to back cuts, this time the ball is past the point fielder in a flash. Roach has lost his rhythm a bit for some reason. 35/2

10.4 K Roach to Taylor, The batsman defends it from within the crease. 31/2

9.2 D Sammy to Taylor, Defended off the front foot by the batsman presenting the full face of the bat. 30/2

9.1 D Sammy to Guptill, Full outside off, 122.6 kph, driven sweetly wide of mid off. The fielder runs slowly after it but the batsmen are happy with the single. Poor running. 30/2

8.5 T Boult to A Fudadin, FOUR! Streaky! Encouraging signs for the Kiwis. Pitched up outside off, 133.7 kph, Fudadin pushes at it and gets a thick outside edge. The ball lands short of second slip and is parried to the third man fence. 15/1

Assad Fudain walks in at number 3, replacing Powell.

8.3 T Boult to K Powell, OUT! Is that a wicket? Oh yes, it sure is! New Zealand have managed to get a break early! Full and just outside off, 132.9 kph, Powell presses forward to defend. The ball seams away and goes off the outside edge straight to Brownlie at third slip. Boult is all smiles. Good reward for consistency. That's what today is got to be all about. Powell departs for 10, WEST INDIES 11/1, TRAIL BY 249! 11/1

8.2 T Boult to Powell, Outside off, 132.2 kph, left alone. 11/0

Darren Sammy into the attack now replacing Tino Best.

8.6 K Roach to R Taylor, Fuller this time, 139.2 kph, driven wide of mid off. Narine ambles after it and there is enough time for the batsmen to come back for the second. 13 runs from the over! Might be the last from Roach for a while. 29/2

8.5 K Roach to Taylor, FOUR! Tonk! That was asking for trouble. Short and wide outside off, 136.6 kph, Taylor does not miss out and slaps it over point for a boundary! It has been a pretty indifferent over from Roach. Looks to have lost his line and length. 27/2

8.4 K Roach to Taylor, Landed well wide outside off, 136.6 kph, not played at. 23/2

8.3 K Roach to Taylor, Full on middle, 139.8 kph, flicked away towards fine leg for a couple. 23/2

6.5 T Boult to K Powell, Fuller, 131 kph, driven straight to mid off. 11/0

6.4 T Boult to Powell, Outside off, left alone. 11/0

Now this is interesting. Fazeer Mohammed informs us on air that the Kiwis got all their laundry this morning in a bunch. Ross Taylor could get his shirt out just two minutes before the game started and as a result, could not iron his shirt. Bad luck.

6.3 T Boult to Powell, The batsman has played that off the front foot and into the ground. 11/0

6.2 T Boult to Powell, Good length delivery just outside off, 130.2 kph, Powell holds his bat inside the line and is beaten. 11/0

6.3 K Roach to Taylor, A lot of people watching this ball will ask, "Does he need to play at this?" Of course he does. It was pitched well outside off, on a length, 136.6 kph, and could have been left alone. But then, the ball decided to have some fun and darted back in off the seam, which made Taylor play it. And he was beaten. 12/2

6.2 K Roach to Taylor, Drives this straight to mid on. 12/2

6.1 K Roach to Taylor, Full outside off, 134.5 kph, pretty wide, left alone. 12/2

The players walks out to the middle! Doug Bracewell to start off proceedings. Gayle to face. Here we go then!

4.6 T Boult to Powell, Landed outside off, 136 kph, played away towards point. STUMPS ON DAY 1, WEST INDIES 11/0, TRAIL BY 249! 11/0

Brendon McCullum walks in at number 3, replacing Watling.

4.5 K Roach to Watling, OUT! And it has been given as a legal delivery. A very close call and when Watling looks at the replays in the dressing room, he won't be too happy. But a lovely delivery nevertheless. Perfect ball, pitched up to the batsman, Watling prods forward to defend but the ball seams away off the outside edge and goes straight into the bucket-like hands of Gayle at first slip. The umpires check for the no ball and replays seem to show that the foot landed on the line but the third umpire is convinced that while landing, there was something behind the line and gave it out. Might be a touch unlucky, Watling. He departs for 2, NEW ZEALAND 10/1! 10/1

Drama! Watling has been dismissed but he has been asked to wait as the umpires want to check for the no ball.

4.4 K Roach to Watling, Landed outside off, 137.4 kph, Watling pushes forward to defend but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads. 10/0

3.1 T Best to Guptill, Good length delivery outside off, 146.1 kph, extra bounce again, left alone. 8/0

Tim Southee to bowl just the one over. It is the penultimate one of the day. West Indies trail by 255 runs.

2.2 K Roach to M Guptill, EDGED, DOES NOT CARRY! Luck with Guptill at the moment. Landed in the corridor of uncertainty, 137.7 kph, Guptill initially looks to play at it but then decides to shoulder his arms. Is late and the ball goes off the bottom edge and lands JUST SHORT of Sammy at second slip. 7/0

2.1 K Roach to Guptill, FOUR! Streaky! Full outside off, 137 kph, slightly wide, Guptill accepts the bait and goes for it. Seems to reach for it a bit and gets a thick outside edge which flies past gully. Inadvertent, but still a boundary. 7/0

1.1 T Best to Guptill, Good start! Short outside off, 141.8 kph, Guptill initially looks to come forward but then is forced to back away as the ball shoots up and goes past his face. That was some serious pace on the first ball. 2/0
