Mumbai: Selector, manager, administrator – Raj Singh Dungarpur has adorned many caps for Indian cricket. Little did the septuagenarian know that the biggest ignominy of his life was waiting to befall on him.
Dungarpur, who was the former president of the Cricket Club of India (CCI), has been handed a two-year ban from the club’s membership. Continue reading below
The decision was taken at a CCI executive committee meeting, headed by the newly-elected President I M Kadri, on Tuesday.
The suspension is effective immediately. It is learnt that the verdict was 8:4 against Raj Singh.
Effectively it means that Dungarpur will not contest the CCI elections to be held on December 27.
We may recall that Dungarpur, who had served the CCI for nearly 13 years, had been accused of several financial irregularities and conferring honorary life membership on 223 individuals, many of them having nothing to do with sports.
Allegations had been made against Dungarpur for burdening the club with expenses like huge telephone bills (approximately Rs 1,50,000 p.a.), travel and entertainment bills on personal account.
The most serious charge was Dungarpur’s decision to contest the forthcoming election in opposition to the present President Kadri, whose name was supported by Dungarpur himself at the Executive Committee meeting held on August 3, 2007.
Dungarpur was not available for any comments.
