Coaches are just paid heavy packages and generally they do nothing. It all matters on how players perform on the field. A coach can't do much about it," he said.
The enigmatic paceman said all a coach could do is to make players mentally tough and raise their confidence level.
Akhtar said being a paceman his experience was that a bowler needed proper nursing, guidance on his fitness and mental conditioning.
"In the past their was no concept of coaches in cricket yet West Indies were unbeatable because of their pace battery," he said on TV show.
The Pakistan cricket board has appointed former Test captain Waqar Younis to work as bowling and fielding coach with the Pakistan team in Australia and many former players feel the move would pay dividends in the series.
The Board already has attached Intikhab Alam and Aaqib Javed as coach and assistant coach with the national team.
