Mumbai: The surgery on Kumar Sangakkara's right hand's index finger was successfully performed by Dr Gregory Hoy on Monday in Melbourne's Glenferrie Private Hospital.

"This is the first surgery he is undergoing," she added. The patient was instructed to minimize conversations for a day.

According to hospital sources, Sangakkara would need to come again for two days after four weeks for removal of wires. Micro Mitek and Wires are implanted for his DIP Volar Plate Reconstruction and stabilise DIP joint. He is scheduled for an overnight stay at the hospital and in Melbourne for a week for removal of sutures, it is learnt.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is to bear the expenses on Sangakkara's surgery. The board is believed to have paid the total hospital bill charges of $6,850.

Sangakkara would be able to resume practice a few weeks later.
