Brendon McCullum’s 57 was his fifth fifty in Twenty20 Internationals. With this he equalled India’s Gautam Gambhir’s record of scoring most fifties in this format of game.

Interestingly McCullum equalled his own record – he had taken 46 balls for his fifty against India at Christchurch earlier this year.

Incidentally on four out of five occasions McCullum has taken more than 40 balls to complete his fifty.

Ian Butler, by conceding only 13 runs in his four overs, recorded the second most economical figures by a New Zealand bowler in his complete quota of four overs. Only Shane Bond (4-1-12-2; v Kenya at Durban in 2007-08) has returned the better figures.

Roelef van der Merwe’s figures of 4-0-14-2 are the second most economical by a South African bowler in his complete quota of four overs. The record, however still stays with Johan van der Wath, who had the figures of 4-0-13-1 against Bangladesh at Cape Town in 2007-08.

The match provided the second instance of one-run win in T20 Internationals. Both times New Zealand were at the receiving end. They had also lost to Australia by one run at Sydney earlier this year.
