Potchefstroom: Sourav Ganguly's comeback is possibly the most keenly followed sports story of recent memory. After all, he was making a comeback against the biggest odds.

Ganguly's recent record in Test cricket wasn't impressive and even his most vocal supporters had their fingers crossed. But he has proved them all wrong.

A handshake with coach Greg Chappell that made the headlines. But Sourav Ganguly knew that getting back into the dressing room was one thing, making a place for himself in the middle order again, quite another.

At Potchefstroom, he was fighting a battle to prove he had the ability to cut it at this level, and his teammates were making all the right noises.

"We hope he makes runs for us. Hope he uses his experience and plays match winning knocks," India's injured captain Rahul Dravid says.

What makes Ganguly's performance remarkable is that the top order continues to falter. Even at Potchefstroom, Ganguly came into bat at 37 for three, where Sehwag and Jaffer had made ducks, Tendulkar just 10, Laxman 18 and Dhoni 6, and reiterated yet again, that experience at the highest level can be an invaluable asset.

"Sourav has been a tremendous player for the team and his return will definitely boost the confidence in the team. He's here now, and we all have tremendous respect for Sourav. So obviously we are looking forward where not only Sourav but the entire team performs well," stand-in captain for India's warm-up game VVS Laxman, says.

Bigger challenges lie ahead. The first Test at Johannesburg will feature the likes of Pollock, Nel and Ntini bowling with fire. But the first steps of an international rehabilitation have been taken.
