Adelaide: Even as the high-voltage India-Australia series came to an end, one man dominated the proceedings as he retired from international cricket.
Australian vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist, who played his last Test on Monday, bid farewell to the cricketing community and his fans.
But what was it that prompted Gilchrist to call it stumps on his career?
"I was always considering maybe giving up One-Day cricket after this summer, and then trying to get a bit more Test cricket in over the next 12 months. But yes, the moment came and, as I said, it gave me complete clarity in my mind, and I just knew that the time was right," Gilchrist said at the post match conference.
"I think it might or might not have been quoted in the paper today, but it was somewhere between the ball hitting my gloves and the ball hitting the ground on a Brett Lee-Laxman edge," Gilchrist revealed.
Gilchrist also bid farewell to the cricketing community and his fans. "Thank you very, very much for the overwhelming support since my announcement came out a few days ago. All of you have been stunned by it. So I really appreciate that."
"To the Indian cricket team, I think, Anil, you're right. It's been a fine series. You guys have a 2-1 result. It shows a victory to us but you've played an amazing standard of cricket. You've really challenged us in a lot of ways and it's been a pleasure of mine whether it's been playing in Australia or India, to play against Indian cricketers. So thank you very much," Gilchrist added, showering praise on the touring Indian team.
