Kolkata: The West Bengal Government has disallowed setting up of a beer pub at the Club House, the enclosed prime sitting area for VIPs and high-priced ticket holders, at the Eden Gardens during Indian Premier League matches here.

"The state excise department has refused to give the No-Objection Certificate to the Cricket Association of Bengal and local organisers Knight Riders Sports Private Limited who had sought permission for a beer pub," city Commissioner of Police Goutam Mohan Chakraborty told newspersons.

Earlier, the opposition group in the CAB had slammed the association for allowing the company to have a beer pub at the BC Roy Club House, and requested it to revoke the sanction.

The Cricket Members Forum, an umbrella body of CAB members, had also threatened legal action on the issue.

Chakraborty, who inspected security arrangements at the Eden, said 5,000-5,500 policemen would be deployed at the ground during match days. "Security will be at par with what is provided during international cricket matches," he said.

The police chief said barring one or two minor issues, all the problems on security matters had been sorted out.

The spectators would be allowed to bring bread and other food items which cannot be used as missiles, he said.

The cops have also asked the organisers to shift the half a dozen diases erected beside the boundary line for a performance by cheerleaders.

"There will also be special police arrangement at the stage erected on J block, where Kolkata Knight Riders team owner Shah Rukh Khan is scheduled to hold a song and dance routine," Chakraborty said.
