New Delhi: Mumbai police claimed to have averted a tragedy on Saturday night by successfully diffusing a crude bomb from Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium in Vashi area of Navi Mumbai.

The crude bomb was recovered at around 1900 hrs (IST) while a show was on at the auditorium. The auditorium is just 10 km from the Nerul's DY Patil stadium that will host the Indian Premier League (IPL) final on Sunday.

The theatre was evacuated at around 2100 hrs (IST) and a bomb detection squad defused the bomb.

“When we got the news of the bomb, we got alert and came with the force to defuse the bomb. Initially it was a difficult task but then we succeeded in the same,” said DCP R D Shinde.

An eyewitness, Shreedhar, recalled the confusion and panic. “I was there in the auditorium when I spotted this bag during the interval. I then asked the staff to get it checked. They were doubtful and then called the police.”

IPL boss Lalit Modi confirmed to CNN-IBN the match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings will go on as scheduled.
