Kolkata: Unhappy with the "step-motherly" attitude of the Cricket Association of Bengal, 20 groundstaff has threatened to commit suicide if their financial demands are not met at the earliest.
In a letter, sent to the CAB working committee on Monday, the 20 groundstaff, five of whom are involved in the upkeep of Jadavpur University ground, alleged that they have not received payment for five months and hence the only way out for them is to "take some extreme step like committing suicide".
Alleging gross negligence from the part of CAB, groundstaff supervisor Anadi Khatua claimed they were part of the CAB casual staff till a private company hired them.
"The CAB promised we'll be looked after well and will be given PF every month apart from our daily wage of Rs 105 and Rs 130 on every Sunday," he said.
"However, that was never the case as the promises werenot kept and when we protested just before the Indian Premier League, we were assured that after IPL everything will be sorted out and our issue will again be taken up by the CAB. So we prepared the ground for the IPL braving the heavy rains lashing Eden Gardens at that time," Khatua said.
"However after IPL got over nothing happened, though we wrote to the CAB working committee several times. Even in the last working committee meeting they disapproved our demands saying it's not possible," he said.
