Comeback not new for Ganguly

New Delhi: Sourav Ganguly was selected into the Indian cricket team for the first time in 1992 for the Australian tour. Not many believed that he would make a comeback when he was dumped after the tour.

But he proved the critics wrong and came back to not only become a successful batsman but arguably India's greatest ever skipper.

Ironically, after a decade he has confounded the critics again. Ganguly is perhaps a man for whom bucking the trend is matter of habit.

Ganguly is one of Indian cricket's most fascinating characters.

From a superb debut Test century at Lords in 1996 to being termed as someone who couldn't handle short-pitched deliveries, from being the new aggressive face of Indian cricket, to an unceremonious exit, that aroused politicians and his supporters alike, Sourav Ganguly has been through it all.

"I am a firm believer in performance - experience or no experience. It's going to be a new day every day and you need to stand up and perform. It doesn't matter how old are you or how many games you have played," Ganguly says.

With a century for every two 50's, one certainly can't write off his abilities, even though he didn't have a great time in the recent past.

Perhaps that is the key to his mind-set.

"With the amount of runs that I have got for India in the international arena, I always feel I have a chance. I think the entire cricket world knows that I am good enough," he says

However, Ganguly's numbers in South Africa aren't spectacular.

He has played five Tests against South Africa in South Africa and scored 292 runs at an average of 32.44. He has two half-centuries whereas he is still to score a Test ton.

But with none of Team India's fresh blood delivering on their promise, and the experienced men not quite standing tall; perhaps it is time for the Prince of Kolkata to deliver yet again and decisively too.
