New Delhi: The trademark Gandhi cap will soon become history as the Congress Sewa Dal has quietly switched over to the cricket cap.
In the age of Twenty20 cricket, Sewa Dal workers will now wear the cricket cap instead of the Gandhi cap made from hand woven khadi.
The grand transformation in the 123-year-old party was seen at a function of the Sewa Dal, organised at the AICC (Indian National Congress) headquarters here on Tuesday, where the volunteers took to wearing these caps, which normally cricketers or baseball players wear on the playing field.
Gandhi caps, which had a pride of place in the freedom movement, have become a rarity in Congress sessions in recent times. The first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made the cap famous as he wore it almost every time he appeared in public. His grandson Rajiv Gandhi too wore it on certain occasions.
Mahendra Joshi, president of the Sewa Dal, said the Gandhi cap would be used on special occasions like in the case of disaster management where the Congress volunteers are seen organising help.
All the volunteers at the workshop were distributed the special cricket caps with the logo of the Sewa Dal. They got a new jacket which will be worn by the volunteers when they move out in cases of disaster management.
