New Delhi: Mahendra Singh Dhoni's elevation as the captain of India's One-Day team will be a giant leap of faith.

He has defied convention in every sense of the word; emerging from a cricketing outpost that wouldn't have dared this dream just a few years ago.

Ever since his debut for India a little over three years ago, Mahender Singh Dhoni is an international rage, from Presidents to the fan on the street; he is the proverbial poster boy, gifted and remarkably poised.

After Dhoni had led India to a win in Pakistan, President Musharaf said “May I especially congratulate Dhoni for being the architect of the victory. May I tell Dhoni, I saw a placard telling Dhoni to get a haircut but if you were to take my opinion, you look good in this haircut, don’t get a haircut.”

“Jo maine seekha hai senior players ke saath aur jo maine contribute kia hai team ke lie (Whatever I have learnt from my seniors and have contributed), it’s a good feeling and I would like to continue in the future matches as well,” says the flamboyant cricketer.

The journey for MS Dhoni began here, on the dusty playgrounds of Ranchi. It was cricketing outpost that had never featured on the national mind space. Today, a not so silent revolution has swept through these parts.

“Hume bahot inspiration mila hai unse taki hum bhi kabhi unke level pe jake khele (We get inspired by Dhoni and we all like to perform like him at the international level), says a young Ranchi cricket enthusiast.

Meet Anisur Rehman, for years he has toiled to nurture talent in Ranchi. Today he can make the same talent work harder than ever before with just the mention of one name. Anisur Rehman (NIS coach) said “Not just batting, children here are interested in wicket-keeping as well & everyone wants to become Dhoni “

Dhoni's success has also led to him becoming one of Indian cricket's most marketable properties; with crores riding on his shoulders and his face showing up on a range of media campaigns. But, his impact on the cricketing culture of one of India's forgotten regions is quite simply beyond measure.
