New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar blasted 71 from 59 balls while Yuvraj Singh followed it up with a 57-ball 72 as India cruised to a 38-run win on Duckworth-Lewis in the fourth One-Dayer against England at Headingley on Sunday, to cut down England's series lead to 3-2.
India amassed a mammoth 324/6 in a game that saw three rain stoppages, before England ended their challenge on 242 for eight after their target was reduced to 311 from 45 overs.
The last stoppage meant England were 38 runs short of the target on set by the Duckworth-Lewis system.
Even though England skipper Paul Collingwood remained not out on a brilliant 91 off only 71 balls with the help of three fours and four sixes, he failed to beat the dreaded Duckworth-Lewis system.
The Indian top order took heavy toll on the England bowling after Collingwood invited the visitors to bat on winning the toss. All four of the top order scored half-centuries to propel India to a huge score, before the bowlers did their bit to keep England under check.
England were off to a torrid start as Ajit Agarkar snared the wicket of opener Alistair Cook in the fourth over. The bowler then induced an edge off Ian Bell but Sourav Ganguly at second slip failed to hold on to the catch..
Bell and Matthew Prior, however, replied with aggressive intent as they put on 90 runs for the second wicket in a mere 64 balls, threatening to take the game away from the visitors.
But inspired bowling changes thereafter saw Ganguly and Zaheer Khan take two quick wickets in successive overs to remove Prior and the dangerous Kevin Pietersen for a duck.
Rains halted India's progress after 15 overs, as England returned to the game with a revised target of 311 from 45 overs. And with two new batsmen at the crease, England began to feel the pressure with the ever-mounting asking rate.
