Mumbai: It has been a good week for Harbhajan Singh, a five-wicket haul in the Kanpur Test which contributed to an Indian win, followed by a special recognition on Sunday at the Ceat Awards ceremony for completing 300 Test wickets. Harbhajan spoke to CNN-IBN on the sidelines of that honour.
Harbhajan Singh: It feels nice to be rewarded for your performances. I'm very happy and I just want to keep working hard on my game. Hopefully I will continue taking wickets and keep getting these awards.
CNN-IBN: After Anil Kumble's retirement, you became India's No. 1 spinner. How have you seen yourself grow over the last year?
Harbhajan Singh: Those are big shoes to fill. Anil Kumble was a big performer for India and I'm fortunate to have played alongside him, bowling a number of overs with him. I have learnt a lot from him.
Now everyone is looking up to me to bowl the way Anil Kumble has and the number of wickets he has taken. I'm trying my best to prove whatever I can on the field. I don't think I can be Kumble, but I can work hard and try my best to take a lot of wickets which can win games for India.
CNN-IBN: Kanpur must be a remarkable result for you and the entire team. The Sri Lankans were bundled out in that match, never looking in competition. You must be looking forward to the last match of the series as another win will give India the No. 1 Test ranking.
Harbhajan Singh: We are playing very good cricket right now. We have done really well in Test cricket over the last two years, not to forget one-day cricket as well. We have the people to perform in tough situations and they have taken up the challenge and done really well.
Kanpur was a special win, on a wicket where nothing much was happening for the bowlers, even the medium pacers. It was great to see Sreesanth and Zaheer bowl well up front and the spinners finished off the job. Hopefully we can do even better in Mumbai.
CNN-IBN: People know about your bowling credentials. But you also have had some good scores with the bat against you. You must be looking forward to score a Test century.
Harbhajan Singh: Yes. I would love to score a hundred in Test cricket. There have been opportunities where I was batting on 60-odd and have given it away owing to a stupid shot. But that's part and parcel of the game.
I have the potential, even though I might not have the technique to look good at the crease. But what matters at the end of the day is the runs that you score.
