Ganguly a victim of politics: Cairns

New Delhi: Just before the annual contracts come up for renewal, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has found a supporter in former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns.

The dashing all-rounder also tried to put the Sharad Pawar-Damien Martyn issue

in perspective. He was in the capital for a charity event.

Chris Cairns: From the outside, it obviously seems a personality issue, and in any top level, you are going to get that. So, all that Ganguly can do is score runs and that's what he is doing, and ultimately if India are performing badly, then basically there's a chance. The higher you go, the more politics there is. And this is the fact of life.

Himanshu Singhal: What's your take on the Cricket Australia-Sharad Pawar controversy? Do you think the Aussies, with the kind of swagger they show on the field, is it really justified to push around the BCCI Chief like that?

Chris Cairns: I think you have to keep it in perspective. I have seen pushing and barraging, and if you look at it, it was a sort of a nudge, with regards to get him off, and I think Australia, given a time again, I think they would have done it differently.

But the man himself who was involved, has not lodged any complaint. He has on the contrary said that he is not embarrassed about the situation. So, it's an unfortunate incident, it's bad that it happened, but looking into that, one should keep it in context.
