Great job India, well done England

New Delhi: Authentic batting performance. Tremendous bowling show. Despite England’s strong fightback, the Trent Bridge Test always belonged to India and fittingly, they will complete the formalities on Tuesday. Throughout the series, the Indian seamers and Kumble have given creditable performances. They were no different on Monday.

But do spare a thought for valiant England. What could have been at least 1-0 in their favour, has been completely changed by just 60 overs of bad luck (Five on Lord’s last day when they failed to separate Sreesanth-Dhoni jodi, and 55 overs on Day one of Trent Bridge in conditions tailor-made for seamers).

However, England did not let the demons get to them even with their backs to the wall. If we see England’s progress between the two new balls on Sunday and Monday, it is clear that they did not allow the grim situation—with 283 alone needed to erase the first innings deficit with over two days to spare—mentally subdue them.

England’s progress between first and second new ball

49 runs for one wicket in first 20 overs (2.5 eco)

68 runs for no wicket from 21 to 40 overs (3.4 eco)

74 runs for two wickets from over 41 to 60 (3.7 eco)

79 runs for no wicket from 61 to 80 overs (3.9 eco)

It is clear that one of the most productive phases in England’s innings came at a time when the hosts lost wickets. Most sides would have stopped in their tracks, bidding their time in such circumstances, but not this England. They knew that safety first approach will spell disaster. An attacking mindset made their exit honourable indeed.

Big Scores at Trent Bridge

In four days, batting, when conditions have been favourable, has been better than what this ground has ever seen. But unfavourable conditions have played havoc.
