New Delhi: Openers Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly gave a glimpse of the vintage in a crucial century stand but India still made heavy weather of chasing a modest target against South Africa in the second One Day International in Belfast on Friday.

The former skippers put their experience to good use in a 134-run association that laid the foundation in the chase of a target of 227 in the second tie of a three-match series after losing the opening match by four wickets on Tuesday.

Tendulkar, who became the first to pass the milestone of 15,000 runs in the shorter version of the game, was the more fluent of the two as he mustered 93 off 106 balls with 13 fours and 2 sixes.

It was the second time in as many matches that Tendulkar had got out in the 90s after scoring 99 in a lost cause in the opener, and also the second consecutive time that the match was decided in the last over.

Left-handed Ganguly was happy to play second fiddle to Tendulkar during his 75-ball knock of 42 that came with three fours and a six before he gave an easy catch to Herschelle Gibbs at point off medium-pacer Charl Langeveldt.

Langeveldt also accounted for Rahul Dravid as the Indian captain fended off a bouncer clumsily to be out caught and bowled for two after a 10-ball knock. Tendulkar fell immediately afterwards, trying a late cut as India fell to 140-3 and with Mahendra Dhoni’s dismissal without scoring, India had lost four wickets in the space of eight runs.

Yuvraj Singh (49) and Dinesh Karthik (32) guided the team home with six wickets remaining even as South African skipper Jacques Kallis was left with the difficult task of rotating his bowling resources in a tight situation.

It seemed like a touch-and-go affair before Yuvraj tipped the scales in India’s favour with a flicked six over long-leg off Andrew Hall, the former World Champions winning with five balls to spare.

Earlier, opener Morne van Wyk bailed South Africa out of trouble with a gritty 82 as they scored 226-6.
