Bangalore: After Australia posted 430 in their first innings, Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir negotiated the Aussie pace men with confidence before unseasonal rain ended the second day's play with four overs left of the first Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Friday.
India reached 68 for no loss off 18.1 overs in their first innings with Sehwag batting on 43 off 55 balls, including seven fours, and Gambhir batting on 20 off 55 balls with four fours.
Sehwag, who believes in taking the attack to the enemy camp, played some audacious shots all round the wicket. He was particularly severe on Stuart Clark, flicking and driving him at will.
Gambhir took on first change bowler Mitchell Johnson from the other end, slamming him for three fours in one over to bring up India's first fifty off 79 balls. Clark tried the intimidation game but Gambhir only concentrated on hitting boundaries.
With hardly any assistance from the wicket, Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting gave his strike bowler Lee just five overs before making the first change.
Indian left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan claimed the last three Aussie wickets within eleven balls to skittle them out for 430 all out off 149.5 overs in their first innings soon after tea on the second day of the first Test match in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Friday.
Middle order batsman Michael Hussey, who slammed his ninth Test century, was the last man out when he played on to his stumps after making a chanceless 146 off 276 balls, which included 15 boundaries and a six.
In the third session, Zaheer cleaned up Brett Lee for a 61-ball 27 after the fast bowler had frustrated the Indian bowlers by adding 59 runs with Hussey for the eighth wicket.
In his next over, Zaheer had Mitchell Johnson playing on to his stumps for none and four balls later Hussey did the same.
The tourists added 176 runs but lost their remaining six wickets on the second day with Zaheer claiming five for 91 and Ishant Sharma returning with four for 77.
Resuming at his overnight score of 46, Hussey kept the scoreboard ticking despite losing wickets from the other end. He reached his century in 188 ballsto become the sixth Australian to score a Test hundred at this venue and 26th player overall.
