New Delhi: After losing a wicket off the very first ball, India were cushioned to a commanding position, with 50s each from Dinesh Karthik, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly on the first day of the first Test at Chittagong on Friday.
Tendulkar and Ganguly left the field at stumps with India on 295/3 after India won the toss and elected to bat at the Bir Sreshta Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium.
Both Tendulkar and Ganguly were holding the fort in their eighties, the former on 80, while Ganguly was on 82. Only 77 overs were bowled in the day.
Earlier, Indian skipper Rahul Dravid and opener Dinesh Karthik scored half-centuries to take India out of trouble after losing opener Wasim Jaffer on the very first ball of the match.
The visitors decided to bat first after winning the toss but got off to the worst possible start when Mashrafe Mortaza bowled Jaffer for a first-ball duck.
However, after that Karthik and Dravid did not give the host bowlers much to cheer about as they added 113 runs for the second wicket.
At lunch Karthik was unbeaten on 52 off 83 balls with eight fours while his skipper was not out on 52 that came off 72 balls with the help of 10 fours.
But the duo failed to continue with their good work after the lunch with Karthik falling for 56 and 11 balls later Dravid followed him in to the pavilion.
While Karthik was caught by Mohammad Ashraful to become the second victim of Mortaza, Dravid was caught by Khaled Mashud for 61 off Shahadat Hossain.
Ganguly and Tendulkar, however, batted with composed aggression, picking up regular boundaries in the process. Both batsmen were not included in the one-day series that preceded the Tests, which India won 2-0.
The Bangladeshi bowlers lacked the sting that was promised after the dismissal of Jaffer first ball. But spinners and fast bowlers alike, struggled to maintain the pressure on the Indian batsmen.
