Adelaide: Indian captain Anil Kumble admitted that India had lost the initiative in an attempt to square the series when he lost the services of fast bowler RP Singh.
"I thought the wicket played well on all the five days. So it was pretty tough and was a bit disappointing that we lost out RP very early in the first innings. So, having started with five bowlers, it became four," Kumble said at the post match conference.
The Indian captain, however, heaped praise on comeback men Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan, who celebrated their Test returns in style.
"I think he has done exceptionally well, Viru, and also Irfan who came in for the last two Test matches and so did everybody else in the team," Kumble added.
With the conclusion of the Test series, India are now ranked second in the world. But can they keep the momentum going? Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain, believes it will be tough with top players retiring just like them.
"Even though they are the No. 2 ranked team now, they are going to lose probably four or five of their best players, and it might even be before the next time we play them, who knows?" Ponting hinted at veterans such as Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and captain Anil Kumble himself.
"So, they are going to go through a very similar phase that we have gone through in the next 12 months. So it will be really interesting to see how they stack up, or back up from that," Ponting added.
