Mumbai: As the one-day game scrambles for attention after the onslaught of T20 cricket, what is the future of the game? Some believe that both Test and one-day cricket face a bleak future, but the legendary Sunil Gavaskar isn't among those.
Aftermath of T20
"I think if you look at Test matches today, all Test matches are giving you results in four days or at best four and a half days. I think that's why the reason has been mooted to have four-day Test matches," said Gavaskar.
"Test matches has a place of its own. It has withstood the onslaught of the 50-over game because it has been there for centuries and players themselves realise that they will be remembered by what they achieve in at the Test level. So, the importance of Test cricket will always be there," stated the former India skipper.
"The 50 overs cricket will take a little bit of a hit by the popularity of T20 because people are so used to watch a 20-over game; so another 30 overs are going to become a bit of a problem for the viewer to stay and watch the 50-over game," he added.
IPL behind India's early exit?
"If you look at the Sri Lankan team or the South African team, they all played in the IPL but they were not affected. They were still playing out there (in the ICC World T20). I think our team just got outplayed in the three of the matches. We should not read too much into that. It can happen," said Gavaskar.
"We should not point a finger at IPL for that because the IPL is our tournament and we should not find faults with our tournament for no rhyme or reason," he opined.
