Mumbai: Never in the recent memory has an Indian cricket team exhibited the team work, which is so important in winning matches at the highest level, they did in Mohali to record a big win.
Going into the match, the hosts were facing an uncertain future with skipper Anil Kumble ruled out for a shoulder injury. But his replacement Amit Mishra turned out to be the architect of Aussies' collapse in the first innings. And the rookie leg spinner bagged his maiden five-wicket haul on his debut!
Mahendra Singh Dhoni came up with two important knocks to turn the tide in India's favour. His innovative captaincy and hard hitting strokes looked as if it were tailor-made for the situation.
Indian top order has been looked upon with some anxiety for the recent past with Virender Sehwag being in and out of the team as well as his opening partner. But India's search for a formidable opening pair ends with Sehwag and his teammate Gautam Gambhir. The two compliment each other. Probably for the first time, India have witnessed two explosive batsmen as openers. Both like to dominate the bowlers, both can tear any bowling attack to shreds, both are exceptionally good runners between the wicket, and both have fine eye and hand co-ordination and most importantly, both are team men to the core.
When you have such a heady cocktail, no captain in the world would be complaining, especially if they are on song, giving their team good starts (70 runs in the first innings and 182-run partnership in the second) in Mohali.
Add to this a solid as ever Rahul Dravid at number three, legendary Sachin Tendulkar at two down, followed by a stylish VVS Laxman and brilliant stroke-maker Sourav Ganguly and an explosive Dhoni at number seven, you have a complete picture of a bowlers' nightmare.
