New Delhi: Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has become the second bowler in the world to take 700 Test wickets after former Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne.

The 700th victim of Muralitharan was Bangladesh’s Syed Rasel who was caught by Ferveez Maharoof at mid-off in the third Test at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy (Sri Lanka) on Saturday.

With Rasel falling Sri Lanka won the Test by an innings and 193 runs and also whitewashed Bangladesh 3-0 in the three-match series.

In the match that had started on July 11, Sri Lanka had won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat first. Just like the first two matches of the series, Bangladeshi batsmen found the going tough and were bowled out for 131 in the first innings with the Lankans piling up 500/4 declared.

Kumar Sangakkara with 222 not out and skipper Mahela Jayawardene (165) were the star for the hosts with the bat.

Muralitharan took six wickets each in both the innings as Bangldesh were bowled out for only 176 in the second essay to give Sri Lanka an easy win.

The Lankans won each of the three matches in the series by an innings.

Muralitharan's 12 wickets in the Test won him the Man of the Match award and he was also named the Man of the Series for his 26 wickets in three Tests.

With the rate at which Muralitharan is picking up the wickets, it won't be long before Warne's record of 708 Test wickets is broken.
