Mumbai: The much awaited India-Sri Lanka Test series, which has been delayed due to wet conditions, will also see a few new laws being applied for smooth functioning of the umpires’ referral system.

The fielding and batting sides will be allowed three unsuccessful appeals to the umpire per innings to change a decision, according to a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official on Wednesday.

These appeals can be made only by the batsman in the receipt of the umpire’s original decision or the captain of the fielding side, in both cases by the player making a ‘T’ sign with both forearms at shoulder height.

Then the on-field umpire will consult with the television umpire before the on-field umpire delivers his decision either by raising his finger to indicate the batsman is out or by crossing his hands in a horizontal position side to side in front and above his waist three times.

The umpires’ referral system will apply to the Test series only and will not be in place for the five-match One-Day series that follows.

And if the umpires, referral system works to satisfaction, the International Cricket Council (ICC) will allow the live telecast of the communication between the on-field and the third umpire in future, the official added.
