New delhi: The under-19 players to be included in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be drafted, as opposed to the bids made for the senior and international players.

BCCI vice-president and IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi told cricketnext.com on Friday that the draft format has been put into place, where all the 16 listed players will be put in the same bracket of $30,000. “The eight franchisee teams will pick two under-19 players each, and each of them will be worth $30,000,” Modi said.

“The system is very simple. The players will be graded from one to 16, and the franchisees will pick names from a common pool. If a certain franchisee picks player number one, he will automatically have to take player no. 16 as well,” Modi said.

“Similarly, the franchisee picking player no. 2 will get player no. 15 as well, and the sequence will be followed thus,” he added.

Modi added that the current set of players will be under the draft system for the first year and will subsequently go on to the bidding process next year, when another fresh lot of under-19 players will be brought under the draft system.

There has been some criticism among some senior players that the drafting process will deny the under-19 players an opportunity to get the best price, which was expected to be high in the backdrop of the Under-19 World Cup success. It is also being alleged that the BCCI is fighting the franchisees’ cause, since they have already over-spent on the seniors and were not comfortable for the second bid.

Asked if it was fair to draft these players, as opposed to leaving them open to the bid, Modi replied: “All these players are very young, and it is not a good idea to give them something to the effect of half-a-million dollars at their current stage. The impact of that amount of money could be detrimental to their prospects.

“In any case, these players are eligible for the bid from the next year, so I do not think they are being denied opportunities,” Modi added.
