New Delhi: Less than two weeks to go before India tour the island country and a dispute between the Sri Lankan players and the board is reaching a boiling point with an emergency meeting being called for later this week. The players have not been paid for four months as new contracts for the players have not been prepared.
"We did not even see a first draft of the new contract until seven weeks after our last contract lapsed. We have waited patiently for weeks, we have even played on despite being unpaid, but we are now fed up and need this resolved fast," an unnamed Sri Lanka player told Reuters.
Junior players in Sri lanka receive $15,000 a year as a retainer, the lowest annual contract fees of all Test playing nations. And the senior cricketers had demanded a significant increase in the contract fees for them.
However, Arjauna Ranatunga, who heads the board, has reportedly refused any hike in the fees and instead has proposed that players be fined in case they lost a Test match.
Sri Lanka, who just successfully defended the Asia Cup in Pakistan, are believed to be paid the least among all the Test playing nations.
