No surprises in side; shock only for Yuvraj

New Delhi: This was about as good as it was going to get with team selection. Dilip Vengsarkar and his merry men have the luxury of limited choice, so their job was never really too difficult, in commission or omission.

There may be a few (a very few) who think Yuvraj Singh should be given another chance, but this minority was drowned in the clamour of demands of the Punjab left-hander's ouster. It was inevitable, so a simple choice.

The other ones too really did not create a crease on Vengsarkar's forehead, simply because they were practically the only choice. Mahendra Singh Dhoni pulled out, so no problems there. Zaheer Khan reported fit, so easy choice. S. Sreesanth is not, so even easier.

Wasim Jaffer was never the best choice opener anyway, so Gautam Gambhir came back into the fray. Totally no surprises there.

No surprises that the Patels, Parthiv and Munaf, are in the side either. Given the BCCI's pronounced West leanings, it had to be. Can't expect a totally opaque place like BCCI to be completely up front.

Sri Lanka is, in a worst-case scenario, a three to four-hour flight, and you can enter almost without a visa. So keeping a reserve wicketkeeper ready to fly out in the morning, and have him in the field in the afternoon, is not impossible.

In that backdrop, Parthiv Patel is superfluous. But like we said, the BCCI has to look after its own somewhere.

As for Munaf, he always has an assortment of seamers back home packing bags, waiting for him to break down. So stand by all, the VRVs, Gonys, and the rest.
