'Players' expectations more important'

Adelaide: Even as India held their first training session at the Adelaide Oval ahead of the fourth and final Test against Australia, the shadow of the controversial One-Day selection continues to loom large.

Ironically, One-Day captain MS Dhoni faced the media in Adelaide on Tuesday and saw off all bouncers aimed at him.

"We still have one more Test match to go, so I think we should wait with the questions regarding the One-Day players. We have waited for two days, let's wait for another six days," was Dhoni's doosra.

As India's ODI captain, MS Dhoni will be under scrutiny over the next month. But he already seems to be facing the heat over the One-Day squad named for the tri-series.

"I think it has affected journalists more that it has us, because we are back in the practice session, we played in the morning. So it has not affected us in any way," Dhoni retorted.

Sourav Ganguly cut a lonesome figure in practice and is said to be extremely disappointed at being left out. But the BCCI are standing by their selection.

"At the moment, we have to think about the future, so that when we think two years hence, we know how we are going to build the team," reasons Chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar.

The Indian team knows that the next week could raise its stature in the world game beyond the wildest expectations if another memorable victory is scripted. But within the unit, the focus remains on their own expectations.

"It's not about the people's expectations, it's about the players' expectations. You know what you need to do and what the expectations are. It's the people who play the game, ultimately you are the one who faces Brett Lee or Shaun Tait or Mitchell Johnson and knows what the conditions are and what the team needs from you," Dhoni remarks.

There is little doubt that in that Indian dressing room there will be a few disappointed men at the moment. But the mission they face here in Adelaide is perhaps the ideal tonic to leave all that behind and charge for victory.
