Mumbai: The ICC Champions Trophy 2008, scheduled to be held in Pakistan in September, may be postponed until next year.
According to highly placed sources close to ICC officials, a powerful section in the world governing body disapproves of shifting the tournament from Pakistan on security concerns since that may hamper Pakistan's chances of being a co-host of the World Cup 2011.
Hence, a compromise formula is being worked out under the stewardship of ICC's newly appointed Principal Adviser I S Bindra under which the Indian cricket board may soften its stand on hosting the tournament from September 12, allowing Pakistan to host it next year.
The ICC will hold a teleconference with its member countries on Sunday to decide on the fate of the Trophy.
Although there has been talk of moving the tournament to Sri Lanka, the possibility of that seems to have reduced over the last 24 hours. With South Africa having already pulled out and Australia, New Zealand and England making it clear that they won't go to Pakistan in the current security situation, the tournament has been under a cloud.
However, if the ICC fails to hold the event they will have to compensate their broadcast partners ESPN Star Sports a staggering $ 85 to 90 million.
