Mumbai: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is investigating how the team selected by the three-member selection committee headed by Salauddin Ahmed got "altered".
According to sources in Lahore, a letter seeking clarification is being written to the sports ministry on the day when the new chairman Ijaz Butt took charge of the PCB.
Three selectors - Salauddin Ahmed, Salim Jaffar and Shafaqat Rana - selected off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and the team was sent to the sports ministry for final approval. However, the team announced by the Chief Operating Officer Shafqat Naghmi had Shoaib Khan in the team.
"We are investigating whether it was a move "to please" the sports minister Nazumuddin Khan. Because the Boston-born 23-year-old right-handed batsman and medium fast bowler Shoaib Khan (Pathan) also hails from North West Frontier Province-Baluchistan.
The last-minute alteration in the team was also one of the reasons for the chief selector to resign. Salauddin will be leaving for Toronto to witness the four-nation Twenty-20 tournament. "He is going over there in his personal capacity," the source said.
The coach (Geoff Lawson) and the captain (Shoaib Malik) have been given a team of their choice except they wanted Nasir Jamshed but the selectors opted for Khalid Latif. Due to visa problems, Mohammad Yousuf could not be accommodated in the team.
