Bangalore: Former chief selector Kiran More has stressed that middle order batsman Rohit Sharma should be persisted with when the selectors meet on Sunday to pick the one-day team for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy.
"Rohit is a very talented youngster and he should be persisted with. The bad patch he went through in England (during the T20 World Cup) and the West Indies should not go against him and I am sure the selectors will give him another chance especially with vice captain Virender Sehwag a doubtful starter. I am also glad that Rahul Dravid is back in the reckoning as he still has a lot to offer the team," More told Cricketnext.com on Saturday.
"I would also like to see young talented players like Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli in the team to Sri Lanka for the tri-series as just one front-line spinner, Harbhajan Singh, would be more than enough for the short tour," More added.
The former India stumper also expressed surprise over the omission of Irfan Pathan from the 30-member Champions Trophy probables list and said that an all-rounder could have made a huge difference in the Champions Trophy especially with India's pace spearhead Zaheer Khan out due to a shoulder injury.
"Irfan Pathan cannot be termed a failure as his records prove it. I am truly shocked that he has not been considered. With Zaheer sidelined due to injury, Irfan would have been an asset in South Africa but unfortunately he will not be around until and unless one of the seamers get injured and a replacement is sought," More said.
"Though his elder brother Yusuf did not have a very good World Twenty20 and the subsequent four on-dayers in the West Indies, I would still pick him as an all-rounder as the team needs at least one all-rounder while the fast bowlers – Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Rudra Pratap Singh and Praveen Kumar select themselves," he added.
More's 14-member team for Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy is: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kholi, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Ishant Sharma, R P Singh, Ashish Nehra and Praveen Kumar.
