New Delhi: Former India cricket player Ravi Shastri is in trouble after reportedly eating beef in South Africa where he is a commentator for a sports channel covering the India-South Africa series.

A Bajrang Dal leader in Indore, Manoj Malpani, has filed an application before Judicial Magistrate First Class RK Batham, and sought that cases under sections 295 A and 298 A of IPC be registered against Shastri after a television channel reported that the commentator had eaten beef.

The court has issued a notice to a petitioner and has summoned him on January 5 to record his statement.

Shastri, who was a left arm spinner and right-handed batsman, made his Test debut for India on February 21, 1981, against New Zealand at Wellington while his One-Day International career started on November 25, 1981, against England at Ahmedabad.

He represented India in 80 Tests and 150 One-Dayers.

In the Tests, Shastri hit 11 tons and 12 fifties while in the ODI he had four centuries and 18 half-centuries against his name.

He also took 151 Test wickets and 129 ODI wickets and led India to victory over the West Indies at Madras in 1987-88 in the only Test he captained.

But his most memorable moment came when he was crowned with the Champions of Champions title and won an Audi car in the World Championship of Cricket in Australia in 1985.

Shastri bid farewell to his international cricket career after India’s tour to South Africa in 1992-93 before becoming a commentator.
