Sehwag is being stubborn: Sohail

Durban: It is a stroke which has fetched him runs by thousands and it is the one which is now threatening to cut short his career when it should logically have been in its prime now.

Virender Sehwag, once again, perished playing his favourite flashy stroke off the first ball he faced in the South African innings which drew gasps of horror among his countless fans in the stands as it must have in the Indian dressing room and millions of those watching it on telly back home.

"He's just being so stubborn and is not prepared to make any adjustment," said former Pakistan skipper Aamir Sohail in disgust. "It was an awful stroke to attempt off the first ball he faced."

Drawing away from the path of a ball and making room to slash bowlers over the slips and covers has been the image which has defined Sehwag all these years but sadly while bowlers have found a way to work around his methods, Sehwag has not evolved to open other avenues for his success.

Much as Sehwag might flaunt his 4,103 runs from 51 Tests at an average of 51.29; wear the badge of 783 runs from 12 Tests at an average of 43.50 this year and be proud of being the only triple centurion in India's Test history, it's proving extremely inadequate to win him friends in and outside the Indian dressing room.

"It's not that the team management and support staff wouldn't have noticed his obduracy," said Sohail. "They must've advised him but as I said, he's being stubborn."

But for two exceptional knocks of 254 and 180 in Pakistan and West Indies, Sehwag has only 318 runs to show from 17 other innings this year. He has not got a One-Day century from the last 55 matches - it's 35 matches without three figures under Rahul Dravid's stewardship.

"He must guard from giving the impression that he is not interested. He is a senior and important to India's plans," said Ravi Shastri, a long-time supporter and admirer of Sehwag.
