New Delhi: Pakistan are most likely to include fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar in their squad for the Champions Trophy which begins from September 12.
IANS has learnt that Shoaib's inclusion was only subject to his fitness. The fast bowler was to particpate in three practice games in Lahore, the first of which was washed out due to heavy rain.
More rain is expected in the city, which means the rest of the games too could be washed out.
Pakistan are plagued with problems of fitness among their players, with pacer Umar Gul also in doubt after injuring himself during the recently concluded Asia Cup.
All-rounder Shahid Afridi and opening batsman Salman Butt are also battling injury to make it in time for selection for the Champions Trophy.
The International Cricket Council's deadline for accepting the final list of squads for the tournament is August 12, while the Pakistan selectors are to announce their squad a day in advance.
"The four players including Shoaib will be drafted in the Pakistan team subject to fitness. The Champions Trophy is still around five weeks away and the players will have plenty of time to prove whether they are match fit," a source told IANS.
The source added that the three practice games could be rearranged if more rain hamper the proceedings.
Shoaib was included in the list of 30 probables despite numerous problems of fitness and discipline led to a ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
