Karachi: Another chapter has been added in the Shoaib Akhtar saga. He is now free to play for Pakistan until the Lahore High Court reaches a final decision over his appeal against the PCB's 18-month ban.
The PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf has in many ways lead the campaign to keep Shoaib Akhtar out of Pakistan cricket. He led the move to impose the initial five-year ban but the speedster has bounced back, although Ashraf refuses to been outwitted.
"The court said that there is no ban on him till the decision comes but still we have to establish what the court has said. But we respect and honour the court," said Ashraf.
Perhaps a video of this performance will make the selectors consider Shoaib. Given a lifeline to play in the IPL, the Rawalpindi Express charged in for the Kolkata Knight Riders to win this game single-handedly - bowling at his fastest best.
And even his harshest critics know that Shoaib can be an asset.
"He has got to get disciplined, he has got to get fit. No body can stop him from playing for his country. And Pakistan need a Shoaib Akhtar and Mohd Asif but these guys need to realise that they are the ambassadors for the country and the game, hence, they need to have a better approach towards the game," said Rameez Raja.
And Pakistan could do with an injection of fast bowling passion. In recent times their new ball attack has been very un-Pakistani in nature - tepid medium pace and restrictive rather than furious attacking firepower they are usually renowned for.
"To bring him into the fitness, I think is the most important thing because he didn't look very fit in the IPL also. He looked bulky and he need to lose a lot of weight and work really hard to come back to the Pakistani side. Although, Pakistan need fast bowlers but they have to be the fit ones," said Waqar Younis.
All said and done, you love him or hate him but you cannot ignore him. Shoaib Akhtar is back in the Reckoning as Lahore high Court has given him a temporary relief. And in this long stretch of his career, now he wants to play cricket and only cricket.
