Potchefstroom: He was an unfamiliar figure in a familiar story. The top order had given way and at 37 for three; one wouldn't have bet on Sourav Ganguly to make much of an impact in his comeback innings.
Nearly four hours and 83 defiant runs later, another statement had been made.
Rest of South Africa fast bowler Nantie Hayward, says: "I think Ganguly is a great player to be honest. I think he can play, I think he has a lot of cricket left in him. I have played against him a few times and I still have a lot of respect for him as a cricketer. And I think he still has got a lot (to give) for India."
His return to the Team India mix had expectedly made the headlines. A handshake with his nemesis, possibly the picture of the series. He was back among the men he once led and at least on the surface, he got a warm welcome.
"Sourav has been a tremendous player for the team and his return will boost the confidence of the team. We all have tremendous respect for Sourav. So obviously we are looking forward where not only Sourav but the entire team performs," VVS Laxman says of Ganguly
For the man who replaced him as captain, it's been a difficult few months. Losses have piled up and the youth first policy seems to have backfired.
Even as Rahul Dravid fights his own battle for fitness before the first Test, he ironically now has to rely on the very man he deposed to engineer the revival.
"We want Sourav to use his experience and score runs for us. It will help him and the team as well," says India captain Rahul Dravid.
Sourav Ganguly's duck in the second innings proved, the battle is far from won. The road ahead will be a fascinating tale to follow.
