London: Tillakaratne Dilshan's unbeaten 96 is the highest score posted by a Sri Lankan batsman in Twenty20 internationals, bettering Sanath Jayasuriya's 88 against Kenya at Johannesburg in 2007-08.
It was, in fact, the third highest score in all Twenty20 internationals after Chris Gayle’s 117 and Ricky Ponting's unbeaten 98.
Incidentally the previous highest individual score on English soil was Chris Gayle’s 88 at the Oval in this World Cup on June 6.
Dilshan’s innings contributed 60.75 % of Sri Lankan total – the highest in a complete innings (later in the match Chris Gayle got this record on his name with a percentage contribution of 62.37 in West Indian innings). The previous record was held by South Africa’s J-P Duminy with a percentage contribution of 60 (78 in South Africa’s total of 138 against Australia at Melbourne in January this year.
Dilshan,during the course of his innings, surpassed Sanath Jayasuriya’s run-aggregate of 501 to become the leading run-scorer in this format of the game. He now has the third highest run-aggregate in T20 internationals, behind Brendon McCullum (689) and Kevin Pietersen (529).
Dilshan also became the first batsman to aggregate 300 runs in the tournament. At the end of this match his tally stands at 317 in 6 innings with 3 fifties at an average of 63.40 and a strike-rate of 148.13.
Dilshan now holds the record of aggregating most runs in a single world cup, moving ahead of Australia’s Matthew Hayden who made 265 runs in 2007-08 edition.
Dilshan’s tally of 382 is also the highest by a batsman in all World Cup matches, surpassing India’s Gautam Gambhir’s run-aggregate of 375.
Three wickets fell in the first over of West Indian innings (bowled by Angelo Mathews)– a feat unparalleled in T20 internationals. The previous record was of two wickets, which was made on four occasions.
Chris Gayle became the third batsman to carry his bat in a Twenty20 international, after South Africa’s Graeme Smith (v Australia, Johannesburg, 2005-06) and New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum (v India,Wellington,2008-09). However Gayle is the only one to do so in an all-out innings.
The four ducks in West Indies innings provided the fourth such instance in Twenty20 internationals. The record is of six ducks by Kenya against New Zealand at Durban in 2007-08.
Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis became the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, equalling Pakistan’s Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal’s tally of 12 wickets.
West Indies' total of 101 is their lowest in T20 internationals, beating 126 for 7 against New Zealand at Auckland in 2005-06.
