Sachin Tendulkar's 100 was his first at this ground (he had scored 3 at the old Vidarbha CA Ground in Nagpur), his third in consecutive matches (he had made 105* and 143 against Bangladesh at Chittagong and Mirpur respectively), his fourth against South Africa (first on Indian soil) and his 12th in the second innings of a Test match.
This was Tendulkar's 20th hundred at home, 40th in batting at number four, 46th Test hundred and 73rd century of his first-class cricket career.
Tendulkar, with four hundreds, equalled the record of most hundreds by a batsman in India-South Africa Tests. Mohammad Azharuddin and Virender Sehwag are the other batsmen to score four hundreds against South Africa.
Tendulkar has now scored 100 scores of 50 and more in Test cricket (46 hundreds and 54 fifties). He becomes the first batsman in Test history to accomplish this feat.
This was the 41st instance when Tendulkar top-scored in a complete innings for India. Only Brian Lara (49) is ahead of him.
This was also the ninth instance when Tendulkar top-scored for India against South Africa. Only Brian Lara has done so more often (10 times) against South Africa.
MS Dhoni made 25 runs off 112 balls - a strike-rate of 22.32. This is his worst strike-rate in an innings of 25 runs or more. He had made 47 off 123 balls against New Zealand at Christchurch in 2008-09 – a SR of 38.21.
Dale Steyn (10-108) claimed a ten-wicket match haul for the fourth time in his career of 37 Tests.
Steyn's figures are also the best for a South African bowler in the sub-continent. Paul Adams had taken 10 for 106 against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2002-03. Incidentally the previous best match figures by a South African pacer in the sub-continent was Brett Schultz's 9 for 106 against Sri Lanka at Colombo SSC in 1993-94.
Interestingly, the previous record of best match figures by a South African bowler on Indian soil was also held by Dale Steyn with 8 for 114 at Ahmedabad in 2007-08.
Steyn has now equalled Mkhaya Ntini's record of claiming 10-wicket match hauls on most (4) occasions for South Africa. Ntini's four 10-wicket match hauls came in a career of 101 Tests, while Steyn was playing only his 37th Test!
South Africa registered their fifth win against India on Indian soil. This was also their 11th win overall in 23 matches against India.
With five wins and four losses on Indian soil, South Africa became the second visiting team after the West Indies to win more matches than they have lost on Indian soil. West Indies have won 14 and lost only seven in 40 matches they have played in India.
India suffered a defeat after 14 consecutive Test matches. Their previous defeat was against Sri Lanka at Colombo in 2008. This was India's first home defeat after 10 Tests. The previous defeat was also against South Africa at Ahmedabad in April 2008 by an innings and 90 runs.
India suffered a Test loss for the first time under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, after 11 matches.
India suffered their 36th Test loss with an innings margin, 14 of them at home. India have conceded only three Tests with an innings margin in last 25 years at home. All three to South Africa only!
