Melbourne: Former Australia cricketer Mark Waugh feels troubled all rounder Andrew Symonds did not deserve to return to Test team as he was yet to regain his form for the series against New Zealand beginning on Thursday.
"I wouldn't play him. I don't think he deserves to play," Waugh said.
Symonds, who was dropped from the national team owing to his 'go-fishing' act, has managed just 80 runs at an average of 13 in first-class cricket for Queensland this season, and Waugh feels given his present form, the all-rounder shouldn't be playing against New Zealand.
"I don't think he's done enough for Queensland. To me he has looked a little bit flat. I just think he is out of form at the moment.
"No one has got an automatic selection in the team. Andrew Symonds certainly hasn't. He's got to do more for Queensland before I'm happy with him getting back in the team," Waugh was quoted as saying by the Courier Mail.
The former batting great instead backed Watson to build on his India experience.
"I think Shane Watson is a very good player, his bowling was excellent in India and I think his batting can go to the next level," Waugh said. "He has got a very good technique and he's capable of scoring hundreds."
