Johannesburg: Those who believe that the T20 version of the game is not for spinners were given some food for thought by New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori as he struck four crucial blows to ensure a 10-run victory over India at the Wanderers here on Sunday.
Vettori stood out in a contest that saw batting efforts aplenty, bagging 4-20 in four neat overs. The left-arm spinner came out with flying colours with his astute captaincy as well, rotating the bowlers well to help defend a challenging total of 190 in a Super Eights match of the ICC World Championship.
Vettori had a cheap dismissal of Robin Uthappa, an important one of a well-set Gautam Gambhir apart from those of Dinesh Karthik and Irfan Pathan, which put paid to India's hopes of starting the quarterfinal league with a win and leaving them with a formidable task in the remaining two outings against England and South Africa.
India had an explosive start to their innings as the Delhi pair of Gautam Gambhir (51) and Virender Sehwag (40) threw caution to the winds and reputations to the bin, but it was an initiative that the middle-order failed to seize.
Left-handed Gambhir struck 51, once taking 20 off fiery pace bowler Shane Bond, which comprised a six over mid-wicket, a streaky four to third-man and two well-timed ones through the cover region.
If Gambhir relished facing up to the pace-men, Sehwag welcomed Jeetan Patel into the attack with 20 off an over with the field restrictions still in place, the off-spinner going for three fours and a six over the cover fence.
Gambhir struck five fours and two sixes off 33 balls while Sehwag's 17-ball innings consisted of six fours and two sixes.
