Nagpur: Vidarbha, with 10 points from three matches, will take on Assam (five points from two ties) in a crucial Ranji Trophy encounter commencing at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground here from on Saturday.

The hosts, fresh from two outright wins, will need to continue their winning run if they fancy any chance of finding a place in the Elite group.

Assam, following a humiliating defeat against Madhya Pradesh in the last game, would like to put up an improved performance to stay in contention.

The home team is led by veteran skipper Pritam Gandhe, (338 wickets), who will be playing his 100th first class game.

He would look to exploit the brownish VCA track that is likely to provide bounce in the early stages of the match.

Gandhe secured a hattrick against Services and later claimed four key wickets in the closing stages of the match against Tripura to fashion an outright victory.

In form pacer Mohammed Hashim will look to provide early breakthrough in company of upcoming left-arm pacer Srikant Waugh who is likely to replace the unfit Sandeep Singh.

Left-hand opener Faiz Fazal, who scored a double ton against Services, needs to fire against Assam along with consistent Ranjit Paradkar and Shalabh Srivastav to put up a decent first innings total for the home team.

Assam will depend on Jacob Martin (150 runs from four innings) and S Purkayastha (135 runs from four innings) to provide them the runs while lot will depend on medium-pacer K Das and spinners A Konwar, A Katti and R Mali to get the breakthroughs.
