Waqar Younis was Pakistan's captain at the last World Cup in South Africa in 2003. Having served as bowling coach of Pakistan till recently and seen a fair bit of India, Waqar believes teams from the sub-continent will be tough to beat in this World Cup. Waqar was in Barbados recently where he spoke to CNN-IBN correspondent Roma Khanna.
Roma Khanna: You saw the wicket here. What would your advice be for the Pakistani team coming to play here?
Waqar Younis: Well, it looks like a slow wicket, with not much of pace in it. So, I think Pakistan or India or the sub-continent teams will do well on these sort of wickets, because this is a re-laid track. Spinners will do a better job I think.
Roma Khanna: The Pakistani team has faced quite a bit of injury scares. Do you think that can affect the team, their key players?
Waqar Younis: I think not. They are professional; they have been playing for a while so hopefully it shouldn’t affect them. But looking from the outside, it seems the team has some sort of problems in it. They way they are playing at the moment, it seems its going up and down. Pakistan has to sort that out as soon as possible because the World Cup isn’t too far.
Roma Khanna: Do you think this Indian team that lost badly in South Africa and having experienced players is a good contender? Or are there some things that need to be ironed out?
Waqar Younis: The Indian batting line-up has always been the strongest, there is no doubt about that. Their only weak link I can see is their fast bowling, because I don’t think they are still up to the mark but they should be, because the World Cup is around the corner and they are still experimenting with different fast bowlers. I think that might be a problem for them, otherwise I think they are a very balanced side, good batting line-up, good bowling, good to see Sehwag coming back in the side and Dhoni batting really well. So they are a very balanced side.
